Removable braces have become very popular in the last few years. Many patients prefer the convenience and flexibility of braces that you can take out. If you do have removable braces, there are some important things to remember to make sure that your treatment is a success.
Wearing your braces
When you’ve got a removable brace, the success of treatment is heavily dependent on you wearing your braces for the recommended time each and every day. With a fixed brace, a positive outcome is almost always guaranteed. If you don’t wear your removable brace, it simply won’t work. It’s your responsibility to make sure you have your braces in for the right period of time every day. Ideally you should really only take them out to clean them and when you eat and brush your teeth.
Keeping your braces clean
It’s really important to adopt good oral hygiene habits when you have a brace. Even though you won’t be wearing your brace when you eat, it is still possible for food debris and bacteria to collect in and around your braces. Make sure you clean your braces frequently. This will help to reduce the risk of decay and gum disease. If you have any questions about keeping your braces clean, our dental team will be more than happy to help!
Keeping your braces somewhere safe
You don’t want to lose your braces, or spend hours looking for them. If you take your brace out to brush your teeth or enjoy a meal, store them somewhere safe.
Wearing retainers
After you’ve had orthodontic treatment of any kind, it’s advisable to wear retainers. Retainers are customised orthodontic appliances, which hold the teeth in place and prevent movement. Wearing a retainer can help to reduce the risk of relapse.
