Scared of the Dentist? How Our Dental Phobia Certified Doctor Can Help

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

Are you worried about going to the dentist? Has fear put you off going to the dentist for as long as you can remember? At Liverpool Dental Spa, we understand how our patients feel and we offer expert care for anxious patients and those who suffer from dental phobia. Our dental phobia certified dentist, Dr Marius McGovern, can help you to feel more confident and comfortable and guide you through the process of having treatment in a calm, compassionate way.

There are many reasons why people have a fear of going to the dentist. Sometimes, they have a specific phobia, which is related to going to the dentist, such as a fear of needles or the drill, and sometimes, they have been affected by negative, painful experiences in the past. Whatever the reason you feel apprehensive, Dr McGovern and the rest of the team will do everything possible to help you to feel calmer.

Treatment for nervous patients at Liverpool Dental Spa

We know that going to the dentist can be a nerve-jangling experience for many people. We are geared up to provide first-class care for anxious patients and we offer techniques like sedation and innovations like The Wand to make our patients more relaxed and to ensure they enjoy a positive experience.

We recommend sedation for patients who are very anxious about having treatment in cases where they need a course of treatment or they’re undergoing a more complex procedure. Sedation isn’t the same as general anaesthetic, but it does prevent you from feeling pain, and it will help to make you feel completely relaxed throughout the procedure.

If you have a phobia of needles or injections, we may recommend The Wand. The Wand is a wonderful device, which eliminates the risk of painful injections. We often find that patients are scared of needles because they’ve experienced pain in the past, usually as a result of the fluid being pushed through the syringe at speed. The Wand is a pen-like device, which is controlled by a small computer. It regulates the speed of flow of the fluid to prevent pain. It also looks less menacing than a normal injection.

If you’re a nervous patient, call our caring team today. We can help you overcome your fears.

Scared of the Dentist? How Liverpool Dental Spa Helps With Dental Phobia

Wednesday, February 15th, 2017

Dental anxiety is very common. Many people feel apprehensive about having dental treatment, but for some, their phobia prevents them from getting the treatment they need. At Liverpool Dental Spa, we understand the damaging impact of dental phobia, and we pride ourselves on offering first-class standards of care for nervous patients. If you’re scared of the dentist, we are here to help.

Treatment for nervous patients at Liverpool Dental Spa

We recognise that many patients feel anxious at the thought of having a dental procedure, and we realise that the approach we take and the techniques we use make a massive difference. We have a very compassionate, experienced and approachable team, and we will always go the extra mile to make anxious patients feel more relaxed.

Sedation

We offer treatment under sedation for patients who feel very nervous about having dental treatment. Sedation is not the same as general anaesthetic, but it does prevent you from feeling pain, and you will be completely relaxed during the procedure. When you’re sedated, you’ll feel drowsy, and you won’t have much recollection of what happened during the session when the effects of the medication wear off, but you will remain conscious throughout. Sedation may be an option worth considering if you have dental phobia or you’re nervous about major dental treatment. It takes a while for the effects of the sedative to wear off completely, so we recommend bringing a friend with you who can accompany you home. It’s best to rest for the next 24 hours and avoid exercise, drinking alcohol and making any important decisions.

The Wand

Some patients have a phobia of going to the dentist because they are worried about having injections. A fear of needles is common, and it often stems from negative experiences in the past. If you’ve had an injection, which was very painful, it makes sense that you’d be afraid to have another one. The Wand is a device we used to eliminate the possibility of painful injections. This innovative concept controls the speed of the flow of fluid through the needle, which prevents you from experiencing pain when the fluid flows too quickly or there is a sudden surge through the needle. The Wand looks like a basic pen, which is much less threatening than a traditional injection, and it is attached to a small computer.

If you’re nervous about seeing a dentist, please don’t hesitate to call us. We are here to help you, and we’ll do everything possible to make sure you have a positive experience.

We Know How To Look After And Treat Nervous Patients In Liverpool City Centre

Thursday, March 13th, 2014

At Liverpool Dental Spa we know that some of our patients feel very apprehensive before they have dental treatment and we always go the extra mile to help them to relax. We understand that dental anxiety and dental phobia are common issues and we offer a range of treatments and techniques, including sedation, to make the treatment process more manageable. Our aim is to help you to feel calm and confident and to ensure that you don’t feel any pain or anxiety during your treatment.

What is sedation and how could it help me?

Sedation is a very popular treatment for nervous patients; it involves using sedative medication to help patients to feel more relaxed and to prevent them from feeling pain during a dental procedure. Sedation is not the same as general anaesthetic or ‘being put to sleep’; rather than losing consciousness, you will simply feel a little drowsy and very relaxed. Under sedation, patients are able to talk to their dentist and hear them, but they will not feel any pain or have much recollection of what happened during treatment.

If you suffer from anxiety or you are very worried about having a specific procedure, you could benefit from sedation. Sedation enables you to have the treatment you need without feeling scared or nervous and it is also very helpful for those who need complex treatment and those with a sensitive gag reflex.

After treatment

After treatment it takes a little while for the effects of the sedative to wear off fully and we encourage our patients to come to their appointment with a friend or relative and to arrange a lift home. After sedation it is advisable to avoid drinking alcohol, exercising and operating machinery for at least 24 hours.

If you have been putting off dental treatment as a result of dental anxiety or dental phobia, we can help! Our friendly, experienced team can help you to overcome your fears and get the treatment you need in a comfortable and relaxing setting.

We Know How To Look After And Treat Nervous Patients In Liverpool City Centre

True horror lies beyond the rational, and phobias are, in their very nature, irrational. Even if sympathising with such extreme and, often unjustified, fears is difficult, recognising the horror of a phobia’s impact is less of a stretch: People who are afraid of the dentist might literally do anything to avoid visiting one and, subsequently, they live a life without dental care, often letting their teeth rot in to a plaque riddled mess of yellowing husk, exposed roots ad gingivitis. If you don’t visit the dentist, you don’t get your teeth checked, and if you don’t get your teeth checked then horrible things can happen to them. This attitude isn’t rare either: Over three quarters of our American brethren suffer some kind of dental anxiety, whilst 10% – 20% suffer with the crippling stuff. In Britain, around a quarter of the population admit to being scared of the dentist (and that’s just those that admit it)! How do you helps someone through such agonising fear and into to the dental chair? Well, we recommend intravenous sedation.

What is this intravenous sedation?

It is a safe sedative which is administered via a small injection. Application of the sedative will occur before any other procedures and it will make those who use it feel calm and content. Given that it will make you drowsy, do remember to have a friend around afterwards to pick you up! Don’t worry tough, it won’t put you to sleep: You’ll still be able to interact and respond to your dentist, though you may struggle to remember doing so afterwards.

How does it work?

As the name implies, it works via injection. If you also suffer from the, rather common, fear of needles, please talk to a staff member as alternative treatments may be able to be provided. The sedative is applied via a super thin needle and the vein in to which it will be injected will be very close to the surface of your skin. Dental sedation has proved such a hit that it is also being used as a substitute to a conventional anaesthetic in some treatments!

Our staff want to help and are willing to work with you to make that possible. If you have any fears, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We Offer Sedation For Nervous Patients In Liverpool

Saturday, June 15th, 2013

It is not uncommon for people to suffer from fear of visiting the dentist and dental treatments. Their fear may be founded in past dental experiences, such as drilling sounds and pain, or may be due to dental phobia.

A child’s first experience of going to the dentist may lead to dental phobia or dental anxiety in adulthood, as may the experience of the dental environment and care.

Relaxed and pain-free dental treatment

At Liverpool Dental Spa in Liverpool we are sensitive to the needs of nervous patients and offer dental sedation as an option for relaxed and pain-free dental treatment. Combining sedation treatment with a warm and friendly treatment environment helps patients feel in control of their care and comfortable with receiving treatment.

A person may avoid receiving dental treatment due to their dental phobia, and their oral condition and overall health may deteriorate as a result. By offering the sedation treatment option, we intend to make dental treatment available and accessible for all, including those with dental phobia.

The dental sedation option

Individuals have options in conscious or deep sleep sedation for total calmness during dental treatment and a more pleasant experience. There are a range of sedation options including sedation medication, inhalation sedation and conscious sedation.

Nowadays, sedation with treatments such as The Wand reduces fear of needles and dental treatments. Local or general anaesthetic options ensure pain-free treatment that may otherwise place a barrier to receiving needed dental care.

Dental sedation may be provided to give calmness while consciousness is maintained or may be administered similar to a general anaesthetic for a deep sleep during treatment.
