How to avoid damaging your braces

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

When you have your braces fitted for the first time or after a number of clinical appointments when the wires on your orthodontic braces have been tightened, it is common for your teeth and gums to become tender which can make eating certain foods tricky

We recommend that our cosmetic patients try and stay clear of certain foods which are likely to damage your braces, hard crusts on bread or pizza, crunchy raw carrots, apples and foods that are likely to stick to your teeth and brackets such as toffees.

Here at the Liverpool Dental Spa we don’t want our cosmetic patients to see this as a negative thing and challenge you to come up with a range of delicious and nutritious brace friendly recipes and share your ideas with us via our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/liverpooldental and see what other ideas our patients have come up with.

Oral Sex & Oral Cancer Link

Friday, March 25th, 2011

A new report shows that oral sex may be causing more throat cancer than tobacco.

Researchers studying HPV (human papillomavirus) say that it causes 64% of oropharynxl cancers in the US.

It is now thought to be the main cause of throat cancer in people under 50 years old.

Researchers at Ohio State University say the more oral sex someone has had, and the more partners they’ve had, the greater their risk of getting these cancers, which develop in the middle part of the throat.

Over the past five years, health officials have been urging parents to make sure their daughters are vaccinated against HPV to help prevent cervical cancer.

But these new results suggest that young men could also benefit from vaccination because the recent rise in oropharynxl cancer is predominantly among young, white men.

The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) has been calling on the government to include boys in its vaccination programs – designed to guard against the sexually transmitted HPV virus – for years.

Come in to The Liverpool Dental Spa and get a free oral cancer screening with your dental examination.

Dental Implant Success

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Using a bone-creating protein to augment the maxillary sinus could improve dental implant success.

That’s according to experts at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Dental implants won’t work if the bone in which they are anchored is too thin and bone thinning is a common cause and consequence following tooth loss.

The current favoured solution is to supplement the area with bone grafts to stabilise the implant base.

At the Liverpool Dental Spa we measure bone volume specifically to utilize the latest research and techniques to make sure our implant treatment looks as simple as possible but also effective for long term care.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

The former Manchester United and England captain, Bryan Robson, is battling throat cancer.

Robson, 54, who is currently Thailand’s national team manager, underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat on 3 March in a Bangkok hospital, a United spokesman confirmed.

A laboratory report revealed a cancerous tumour that will need further treatment, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The spokesman added that surgeons were ‘confident’ the condition could be treated.

They added: ‘At this moment, Bryan is fine to continue with his role as Thailand coach and his role as ambassador of Manchester United.

The Liverpool Dental Spa offers free oral cancer screening with every check-up. Please ensure you have regular check-ups with our dentists.

Good Dental Hygiene Techniques

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

The best way to maintain healthy teeth and a great smile is to practice good dental hygiene. So, for great spring cleaning to get those winter time cobwebs out of your mouth, here are some great tips to get your smile ready to rock:

1. Brushing: Make sure you brush your teeth after each meal
2. Daily dental routine: Get into a routine of brushing and flossing your teeth daily. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day. A good time to brush your teeth is in the morning and at night
3. Flossing: Make sure to floss at least once a day
4. Effective toothbrushes that get positive results: The best type of toothbrush to use is a soft, rounded toothbrush that is not to big because you want to make sure that you brush all areas of your teeth and mouth
5. Get rid of the old and bring in the new: Remember to replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months
6. Electronic toothbrushes: You can use an electric toothbrush if you prefer. Research suggests that powered toothbrushes with a rotating brush that moves back-and-forth are better to use than other types of toothbrushes. As an insurance company, we would prefer everyone to be using the best toothbrush they can afford
7. Use fluoride: Always brush with toothpaste that contains fluoride. Toothpaste that contains tarter control is good toothpaste to purchase because tarter control toothpaste will help slow down any mineral buildup developing on your teeth.
8. Hold your toothbrush the right way: When you brush try holding your toothbrush in a position that will not only brush your teeth, but brush the gums well too. While you brush your teeth, move the brush back and forth brushing your teeth in a circular motion. Brush softly not hard, because you can make hurt your gums and damage your tooth enamel.
9. Brush your entire mouth not just your teeth: Brush all tongue and the surfaces of your cheek. Make sure you brush your front and back teeth the best.
10. Cleaning your tongue is just as important as cleaning your teeth: Brush your tongue after you brush your teeth. Brushing your tongue helps remove plaque, which can cause your breath to smell bad and you, can also develop bacteria in your mouth if you do not brush your tongue along with your teeth.

Spring cleaning helps make all things new again. Give your smile a chance to do the same. You’ll be glad you did. And your family, friends, and co-workers will all appreciate how great you look.

At the Liverpool Dental Spa we don’t just look after implants and veneers or whiten your teeth. Our commitment is to enable you to have the best smile possible for as long as possible.
