What To Do About Wisdom Teeth

Thursday, May 26th, 2016

The wisdom teeth have a bad name because they can be painful. If you have troublesome wisdom teeth, are in pain and you need help, we’re here for you! Simply call to make an appointment and we’ll fit you in as soon as we can.

About wisdom teeth

Our wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt. They are also known as the third molars and are located at the very back of the mouth, in the four corners. Most people start to get their wisdom teeth from the age of 16, but the time they develop varies hugely. Some people don’t get their wisdom teeth until they reach their 20s. Often, the wisdom teeth don’t cause any problems, but if there’s not enough space in the jaw for them to grow properly, they can start to develop at an angle and push against the neighbouring teeth, which can cause discomfort.

What are the options for painful wisdom teeth?

If your wisdom teeth are causing you pain, have started to push against your other teeth (i.e. have become impacted) or are decayed, it is usually best to take them out. You don’t need your wisdom teeth, so it’s usually better to extract them than leave them in if they are causing problems. If they are fine and you’re not in any pain, they can be left alone.

Wisdom tooth extraction is sometimes more complex than traditional extraction procedures because of the location of the teeth. They are harder to access than other teeth, and if they have started to grow at an angle, this can be particularly tricky. If you are having your teeth extracted, you will be cared for by one of our highly experienced dentists. Your tooth will be numbed completely before treatment so that you don’t feel a thing, and your dentist will do everything they can to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the entire procedure.

Defeating Decay: Focus on Fluoride

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

At Liverpool Dental Spa, one of our main concerns is fighting dental decay and we encourage our patients to take steps to protect their teeth from cavities and keep harmful bacteria at bay. Here are some of the measures we recommend for strong, healthy teeth:

Preventative treatments

We offer a selection of preventative dental treatments designed to protect your teeth from decay, including fluoride varnish and fissure sealant treatment. Fluoride varnish treatment takes minutes and there is absolutely no pain involved. Fluoride is simply painted onto the tooth enamel to strengthen it. Fissure sealant treatment is also really straightforward. It involves creating a sealant barrier between bacteria and the tiny cracks and pits in the tooth surface. It’s very simple, it’s completely painless and it only takes a few minutes. We simply apply sealant to the tooth and then set it using a bright light beam.

Fluoride toothpaste

We recommend fluoride toothpaste for adults and children (children aged under 7 years old should use specially designed children’s toothpaste products, which contain a smaller amount of fluoride). Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in water and added to water supplies in some areas of the country. Fluoride has oral health benefits as it helps to make the enamel stronger and protect the teeth from cavities. Always follow the usage instructions carefully when brushing.

A good oral hygiene regime

A good oral hygiene regime makes a massive difference to your oral health and the good news is, it only takes five minutes a day to give your teeth a good clean and polish. We recommend brushing your teeth each morning and evening for around two minutes each time using fluoride toothpaste and a brush with a small head and soft or medium bristles. We also advise you to use inter-dental brushes or floss to clean between your teeth.

A healthy diet

Your diet is heavily linked to your risk of decay, so keep an eye on what you eat, particularly when it comes to sugar consumption. Avoid sugary and acidic foods, especially between meals and always wait at least 60 minutes after eating to brush your teeth.

What Happens When You Don’t Visit the Dentist

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2015

Surveys show that many people wait longer than the recommended time to see a dentist. We strongly recommend six monthly check-ups for children and adults in order to prevent oral disease and keep the teeth and gums healthy.

What happens if you don’t see a dentist on a regular basis?

It’s really important to see a dentist on a regular basis, even if you haven’t got any pain and your teeth and gums feel fine. Regular check-ups allow us to spot early warning signs of gum disease, decay, bad breath and even oral cancer and this means that we can provide treatment quickly to prevent the situation from getting worse and save you from suffering.

If you avoid going to the dentist or keep forgetting to book that all-important check-up, your risk of dental disease will increase and you might end up paying more for dental treatment, as complex courses of treatment are more expensive than routine treatments. There is also a risk of staining and discolouration, which may affect your confidence.

There is also a great deal of evidence to support a link between oral and general health and avoiding the dentist may actually increase your risk of general health problems, as well as oral disease. Studies show that gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease and strokes.

Nervous patients at Liverpool Dental Spa

Dental anxiety is one of the main reasons people steer clear of the dentist. At Liverpool Dental Spa, we have expertise in caring for anxious and nervous patients and we promise to make you feel comfortable and to help you overcome your fears so that you are able to come and see us again in the future without any worries or fears.

If you’re due a check-up, now is the time to call and book an appointment. We look forward to seeing you!

Family dentistry lies at the heart of what we do and we offer terrific treatments for adults and children. We are proud to champion the belief that prevention is better than cure and we offer an array of general dental treatments in addition to the latest cosmetic, restorative and orthodontic services.

Children’s dentistry at Liverpool Dental Spa

Dental care is so important for children and we love to welcome young patients to our clinic. We have a very caring and warm approach and we  make children feel safe and comfortable and to prevent them from feeling scared. We know that the sound of dental drills and whirring instruments can be pretty frightening, but we’re here to make every dental trip fun and ensure that kids look forward to going to the dentist. We’ve got toys, books and films aplenty and our dentists are always willing to give children a tour, answer their questions and show them how to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

In addition to routine check-ups, we also offer preventative services for children, including fluoride varnish and fissure sealant treatment. These simple, painless treatments can make a massive difference to children’s oral health by reducing the risks of tooth decay. Fissure sealant treatment creates a sealant barrier between the pits in the surface of the tooth and food debris and bacteria, while fluoride varnish strengthens the enamel.

Adult dentistry

We offer a vast selection of dental treatments and services for adult patients, from dental hygiene and general dental treatment, to the latest cosmetic dental innovations. Whatever your needs, we are here to help! We have an experienced dental team and a beautifully designed clinic. Our treatments include cosmetic, restorative, orthodontic and general dental treatments, a spa service and facial aesthetics.

The Best Way to Maintain Healthy Teeth and Smiles in the City of Liverpool

Monday, July 16th, 2012

When we eat and drink every day food particles build up little by little in our mouth, caught between our teeth. Without cleaning our teeth, these food particles will begin to rot, which causes bad breath. It will also cause plaque and eventually tartar to start to grow around the teeth. This discolours the teeth, affecting your appearance, but it can also lead to the teeth becoming damaged and weakened due to the tooth’s enamel being eroded. Eventually this will cause cavities or even more serious problems such as tooth loss. Gum disease can be another consequence of inadequate dental hygiene.

Dental hygiene at home

To help prevent this it is important to maintain good dental hygiene at home. The most important step is of course brushing the teeth with fluoride toothpaste, at least twice a day. Do not brush too vigorously, as this can damage sensitive tissues. Flossing is also important, as this will help to clean between the teeth, an area that cannot be reached with a toothbrush and so is more prone to decay. The use of a fluoride mouthwash is also important, as this will help to rinse and clean the whole mouth, again, including areas that cannot be reached with a toothbrush. In addition, a good diet is important, particularly one that avoids too many sugary foods – especially between meals.

Dental hygiene at the practice

Even with a good hygiene routine, it’s a good idea to visit your dentist in the City of Liverpool occasionally for a professional clean, or a scale and polish. This will ensure that teeth remain as clean as possible, as well as helping them to look and feel better in your mouth. A professional hygienist can of course provide a more thorough clean than is possible at home, and may be able to help those with more serious problems such as hardened tartar, or periodontal (gum) disease.
