Dealing With Dental Phobia In The Heart Of Liverpool

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

It is hard to argue with that which is not rational, and phobias, by their very nature, are irrational. As a result, alternative methods to reasoning need to be concocted in order to coax out the myriad of silent and not-so-silent sufferers of dental phobia from under their certainly-not-a-dental-practice places of hiding. In all seriousness, dental phobia is a serious matter: In America, for instance, at least three quarters of the general public suffer with some kind of dental fear, whilst somewhere around 10% and 20% of Americans suffer from dental phobia so crippling that they refuse to go to checkups and surgeries. Not doing so, of course, will allow problems to run unchecked and will seriously impact one’s oral health. That those figures are from across the pond shouldn’t be a comfort either: according to the British Dental Foundation, around a quarter of people will publicly admit to being scared of the dentist and many more are speculated to be afraid of admitting those fears. So, the question remains: how do you deal with an irrational fear which can impact one so terribly? Well, at Liverpool Dental Spa we like to use intravenous dental sedation…

What is this intravenous sedation?

Fear not, it is safe as houses. The sedative would be administered before any procedures would begin and it should make you feel calm and contented. You will not fall asleep and will still be able to interact with the dentist. Other’s have compared the feeling produced by sedation to being a little tipsy, so it is a good idea to have a friend on call afterwards (sort of like a designated driver).

How does it work?

To be frank: via injection. If you also have a fear of needles, please talk to one of our staff as some alternatives may be able to be provided. The sedative is applied via a very thin needle that is used on a vein, which is incredibly close to the surface of your skin. Dental sedation is proving so popular that it is even being used as an alternative to a traditional anaesthetic during treatments!

Sedation And Dental Phobia In Liverpool

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

Dental phobia can often immobilize sufferers from seeking the dental treatment they desperately need. Teeth, unlike the rest of the body, are unable to heal by themselves and need the assistance of a dentist. However, dentistry has moved on from the scary days of barbershop dentists and today’s dentist are trained in the care of nervous or dental phobic patients. Treatments have also improved, becoming faster, gentler and more efficient. Dental sedation has also proved to be a massive boon to dental phobic patients, allowing them to have treatment free of anxiety and pain.

What is dental sedation?

Dental sedation is an intravenous solution, which gently eases the patient into a state of pain-free calm. The patient is awake during treatment, but doesn’t feel any pain or feel an anxiety. They are fully conscious and able to breathe by themselves and to interact with their dentist, but throughout and after treatment they feel no negative emotions. Although the patient isn’t unconscious for their treatment it is recommended that a friend or family member accompany them home, as they may feel mildly disorientated afterwards.

Helping dental phobic patients receive treatment

Dental phobia can greatly affect a person’s health and well being, with dental problems only likely to get worse without the aid of a qualified dentist. Sedation and gentle dentistry helps nervous patients receive the treatment they need, free of stress and pain. Sedation is available at our clinic, along with an eager ear to listen to all your worries and queries and patient and gentle dentistry to help you feel confident during your time at the practice.

If you would like more information about dental sedation please do not hesitate to ask for a consultation at the practice in Liverpool. We would be very happy to help you achieve the smile and dental health you deserve, free from pain and worry.

Sedation And Dental Phobia For Patients In The City Of Liverpool

Monday, April 8th, 2013

No one really enjoys visiting the dentist. But for some people, the fear is genuine and can bring out a large amount of terror at the mere thought of stepping into a clinic. This has been diagnosed as dental phobia and can in some cases be a very frightening experience. Anxiety attacks are common and the fear is brought on either by the fear of the dentist or work done at the dentist that involves needles and pain.

The fear of the dentist is now well recognized and something can actually be done about it. If you have dental phobia, you’re more than likely ignoring any toothache you have until it becomes a major problem. Decay is hard to detect without frequent visits to the dentist, you might be causing yourself more trouble because you could have had earlier, less invasive treatment.

Helping with dental phobia

Liverpool Dental Spa now offers sedation to particularly anxious patients to help them relax before a procedure. This is a small injection that won’t knock you out but will help you relax enough so that the dentist can carry out the procedure. It removes all the worries and pain before the treatment takes place so that you can stop fretting and allow the dentist to fix your teeth. You’ll still be able to breathe and talk on your own but you’ll notice that you feel much more relaxed and you won’t suffer any anxiety attacks associated with dental phobia.

Once you have had the procedure, you will need someone to take you home because although sedation doesn’t make you unconscious, it can make you feel woozy and distort your inhibitions. However, this will wear off in a couple of hours and you can leave the dentist happy for the first time, following a successful treatment.

Sedation And Dental Phobia For Patients In Liverpool

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

Many people suffering from dental conditions also suffer from dental phobia or anxiety, due to which they become unable to receive the required treatment for their dental condition.

People who suffer from dental phobia often deny care and treatment for their dental conditions, sometimes even for years. In some cases the individual who is too fearful of dental treatments might be suffering from conditions like bleeding from gums, tooth ache and tooth loss

At Liverpool Dental Spa, patients who are anxious of dental treatments are offered sedation. This allows them to be at ease during the treatment. Since the patient is sedated before the treatment begins, they do not feel pain or anxiety during the procedures.

How sedation works

The sedation will be administered through the vein at the back of the hand or arm. After this the patient will feel fully content. The patient will able to breathe and communicate with the dentist under the effect of sedation, but will not feel the pain. It is highly advisable to have a relative or friend accompany the patient to help them get back home while the effect of the sedation wears off.

All over the UK, sedation is being used as an alternative to anaesthesia. Under anaesthesia the patient becomes unconscious, while under sedation even though the patient does not feel any pain or anxiety, they still remain conscious. Patients suffering from dental conditions no longer need to keep suffering due to the fear of pain or discomfort.

Patients suffering from conditions that make it difficult for them to control the movement of their body, for example Parkinson’s disease will also benefit from sedation dentistry.  It also allows the dentist to fully control the treatment, as the patients are not anxious and are more likely to cooperate with dentist. This certainly speeds up the treatment procedure and could even result in reduced number of appointments with dentist for a specific treatment.

The Wand Explained For Patients In The Heart Of Liverpool

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Expelliarmus! …no, it’s not that kind of wand. But, for people suffering from dental phobia, this wand is also pretty magical. Dental phobia can be crippling and can even cause such distress in its sufferers that they let their teeth fall into disrepair. Sadly, for some, ‘dental phobia’ can just be an umbrella term for numerous fears that revolve around dentistry, making it hard to tackle. One such sub-fear is the fear of injections, often stemming from that short sharp pain provided by a syringe. What most people don’t know is that the syringe itself isn’t what causes this pain; it is that the syringe’s contents are being delivered too quickly or with a bit too much force. Thankfully, with the wand, this side-effect can be a thing of the past!

What is the wand exactly?

Essentially, the wand is a computer controlled injection system. The flow of the anaesthetic it injects is controlled by a computer and kept at a steady pace, thus removing the human error that can cause pain during injections.

What is so great about it?

Technically the wand’s manufacturers now call it the CompuDent and STA (Single Tooth Anesthesia) System, but it is often referred to colloquially as the wand by patients on account of how effect it is – it’s like magic! Visually, it also looks more like a pen attached to a space-age toaster. It looks non-threatening and studies have found it to be less anxiety inducing than other methods of injection (Kudo et al, 2001). Administration of an anaesthetic via the wand can also reduce the amount of unnecessary numbness in the lips, face, cheek and tongue which can cause discomfort for a few hours after treatment.

Injection method!? So, is there still a needle?

Yes, but it is a small one and it guarantees no pain. If you experience fright at the sight of a needle you need not worry, you’ll hardly be able to see it.

Do all dentists have this?

No, but at Liverpool Dental Spa we do! If you suffer from dental anxiety, please talk to us. We will do everything we can to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

Dental Phobia and The Treatments Available in Liverpool

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

Dental phobia or a general fear of the dentist especially when it comes to treatment is common. There are many reasons why people develop a fear of visiting the dentist, these fears can include a fear of pain, the drill, needles, embarrassments about their mouths or the actual dentist themselves.

Whatever the reason for the fear and anxiety, there is a treatment or course of action that can be taken to alleviate the fear, so you can get the dental treatment required.  If pain and needles are the problem then the use of anaesthetic creams to numb the area may well be sufficient to calm the patient.

Sedation methods

However in more extreme cases sedation may be required. This can be either full (anesthetize) or partial sedation and removes the possibility of any pain being felt or drilling sounds being heard. Sedation is given intravenously and the needle is usually place either on the back of the hand or the arm. As the drug begins to work you will become calmer and more relaxed.

Depending on the level of sedation, you will either be totally unconscious for the treatment or be partially so. Longer treatments tend to warrant full sedation and unless requested a partial sedation will be used.

After treatment

Once the treatment is complete you will feel a little light headed, therefore you cannot drive and it is recommended to get a friend or family member along who can get you home. The use of sedation in the partial format is widely used to help patients overcome their fears and be able to get the dental treatment they require. If you are suffering with a fear of the dentist then we are here to help. Contact our team at Liverpool Implants & Aesthetic Dental Spa for an informal discussion today.
