Patients In Liverpool Can Treat Missing Teeth With Innovative Dental Implants

Thursday, July 4th, 2013

Missing teeth can cause all kinds of problems, but thankfully we have the perfect solution: dental implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants have revolutionised modern dentistry; they have become an increasingly popular option for patients who have lost teeth and are generally considered to be the best long-term treatment for tooth loss.

Dental implants are small titanium rods, which are implanted into the jaw bone; a hole is drilled into the bone and the implant is then placed inside the socket. The aim of the dental implant is to replace the root of the missing tooth.

Dental implants are made from titanium in order to facilitate osseointegration, the process by which the implant integrates into the bone tissue; titanium does not interfere or irritate the gums and it lasts for a very long time.

When are implants used?

One of the best things about dental implants is that they can be used to treat a wide range of patients, from those who have lost a single tooth, to those who have full sets of missing teeth. Implants are left to heal in the jaw bone and once they have integrated fully into the jaw bone, an abutment is attached, which can then be connected to a single crown, a dental bridge or a denture. Single crowns are used when a single tooth is missing, a dental bridge is used when a small number of teeth are missing and a denture is used when a full arch of teeth is missing.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants represent the very best of modern dentistry; they look and feel like natural teeth, they function in the same way a natural teeth and there is no risk of the restoration coming loose or irritating the gums because the implant is anchored by the jaw bone. Dental implants also last a lot longer than a bridge or denture and they do not interfere with the surrounding gum or bone tissue; they can also help to reduce bone loss. The Innovation Of Implant Retained Dentures

Friday, April 12th, 2013

If you suffer from missing teeth, you may have to consider the idea of dentures. In the past, dentures have been linked to the elderly and were prone to dropping out in the middle of meals or conversations, making them a very embarrassing prospect. However, implant retained dentures eliminate the chance of losing your teeth for they anchor your new prosthetics directly into your jaw just like the roots of your natural teeth.

The dental implant procedure

As the procedure does contain some element of pain, a local anaesthetic is given to you in order to numb the area so you won’t feel a thing. The gum is then opened and a titanium screw in secured into your jawbone. Once this has been stitched and the wound has healed, your new prosthetic tooth can be secured in place. The tooth is carefully designed to closely match the natural colour of your other teeth so that no one will realize it is a prosthetic tooth. Once complete, there is little chance that the implant will fall out so implant retained dentures are a permanent fix to missing teeth.

The advantages of dental implants

At Liverpool Dental Spa the implants are incredibly stable and durable so it’s unlikely that they will ever fall out. Also, the fact that they are screwed into your jaw allows for improved function when eating, as the teeth won’t move. Other dentures can sometimes affect your speech but this is not the case with dental implants so you have no worries in that area. They are a simple procedure that can actually improve the health of your other teeth. Missing gaps can lead to bone loss around the area so by filling the gap, implants can prevent this from happening so you can enjoy healthier teeth for longer.

The Variety Of Dental Implants At Liverpool Dental Spa

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Dental implants are one of the most effective ways to replace missing teeth. They look and function just like real teeth, are cleaned like normal teeth (unlike other replacement methods) and can even  help stimulate the surrounding bone of your jaw, thus preventing the bone loss and change in facial structure associated with dentures. Unfortunately, this treatment isn’t always available to everyone, with bone density problems being the most common barrier. Thankfully, with mini-implants, at Liverpool Dental Spa we are able to provide dental implants to a wider range of people.

What are implants and how mini-implants any different?

Implants are fake teeth which are attached to your jaw, usually by a metal rod. Mini-implants, as the name implies, are just smaller versions of the same thing.

The benefits of mini-implants

Perhaps the greatest benefit of mini-implants is that they offer the benefits of standard implants, but to more people. Traditional implants can also require months of bone fusion before those replacement teeth can be fitted properly. With mini-implants, however, those replacements can be fitted on the same day! The process of fitting mini-implants is also far less invasive than convention implant treatment; gone are the incisions and drilling that can put so many off.

A variety of uses

Other mini-implants can be used for single tooth replacements, they can also be utilised to attach whole sets of teeth; 6 mini-implants, complete with screw tops, can be inserted into your jaw. Dentures can then be attached to, and removed, from these screw tops at your leisure. This is a fantastic way of overcoming the slipping issues associated with dentures, as well as accelerated bone loss: When dentures are worn without stabilised implants, they compress the gingiva and subsequently lessen the supply of blood to the bone. This causes accelerated bone loss. Dentures with mini-implants, thankfully, can stimulate the bone and help prevent this rather undesirable side-effect.

Who is suitable for the mini-implant?

Even though the mini-implant allows a wider range of people to have access to implant treatment, it is still not suitable to everybody. Heavy smoking or drinking may render you unsuitable, as will active gum disease. Come in for a check-up at Liverpool Dental Spa and we can let you know!

Implant-Retained Dentures For Missing Teeth For Patients In Liverpool

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Although they are still a great way to replace missing teeth, traditional dentures are not without their setbacks. Over time they can loosen and not adhere as well as they originally did to the wearer’s gums. For this reason, Liverpool Implant & Aesthetic Dental Spa is pleased to offer a revolutionary new approach to dentures which addresses these issues.

Implant-retained dentures are the most advanced form of dentures currently available. They offer ultimate security and provide high levels of stability. The dentures are anchored in place on posts, which are secured in the sockets of the jawbone. This provides permanent support and increased durability. The advantages of implant-retained dentures include:

  • Aesthetically pleasing: They are lifelike and resemble natural teeth.
  • Greater peace of mind: Wearers need not worry about the devices coming loose.
  • Functionality: They provide improved levels of stability and durability. Wearers are free to eat what they want without any worry about breaking the device.

Implant-retained dentures provide greater retention if replacing missing teeth, also improving the aesthetic appearance and functionality of the mouth. They are recommended for patients who are in good oral health and who do not smoke. If you have been approved for the procedure you will undergo a straightforward procedure.

  • During the procedure, an incision will be made into the gums.
  • Next, the gum tissue is lifted so that a hole can be drilled into the jawbone.
  • The implants will be placed in the newly-drilled hole and the gum tissue is stitched and left to heal.
  • At a later appointment, the dentures are attached and the procedure is complete.

Bone Grafting For Patients In Liverpool Needing Dental Implants

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Dental implants are the artificial replacement for tooth roots that are placed within the jaw bone. Patients wanting a dental implant would need sufficient bone mass to support the dental implant; otherwise the implant could possibly fail.  In the past, patients who did not have sufficient bone levels were deemed unable to receive the implants.  However, with the development of technology and science patients who do not have sufficient bone levels can now receive implants with the help of bone grafting.

What is Bone grafting?

The procedure of bone grafting allows the dentist to take the bone tissue from an area where there is higher density of bone and use it to increase the bone levels where there is lower density of bone. In case of bone grafting for dental implants, bone from another part of the body is added to the jawbone. Generally, bone grafts are taken from another area in the mouth or from the hip area. This procedure is only required when the dentist concludes that the patient has insufficient bone levels in the jaw.

Different Types of Bone Grafting

Out of the many types of bone grafts available today, the most commonly used is known as Autograft or Autogenous. Under this type, the bone graft is taken from another part of the patient’s body and is applied to the jaw bone. Bone grafts can also be taken from other humans, in which case it is called Allograft and when a bone graft is taken from an animal it’s called Xenograft. Alloplastic graft is the procedure during which synthetic material is used to add strength to the jaw bone.

Disadvantages of bone grafting

Even though bone grafting is an effective procedure, success is not guaranteed. After the bone graft is done, the patient will need to wait for approximately 3 to 4 months. This time period is required to allow the bone to integrate. However, this period of wait will only benefit in the long run. For more information on bone grafting and dental implants please contact the team at Liverpool Dental Spa today.

Patients In The Heart Of Liverpool Find Out All About Mini-Implants

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Sometimes dental implants just aren’t a viable option, often because of bone density problems. Mini-implants are a relatively new innovation in dentistry, pioneered by one Dr. Victor Sendax; a Manhattan dentist. Mini implants allow people who previously would have been unsuitable for implants to have an almost instantaneous dental restoration.

What are implants and how are mini-implants different?

A dental implant is essentially a fake tooth which is anchored in to your jaw, often by a metal rod. Mini-implants are essentially small versions of these rods which can be used on jaws with a lower bone density.

Other uses

Mini-implants can be used for more than just replacing individual teeth. They can also be used to stabilise removable dentures:  Six mini-implants with screw tops can be inserted into the jaw; your dentures can then be attached to and removed from these implants. This is a very effective way of preventing denture slippage. It also has the added benefit of overcoming a common problem with dentures: Accelerated bone loss. Dentures worn without stabilised implants compress the gingiva and reduce the blood supply to the bone, which causes accelerated bone loss. Wearing dentures with mini-implants, however, can stimulate the bone, as they are anchored in, and help prevent bone loss.

Standard procedure

The procedure is quite simple, relatively quick and not particularly invasive. The patient will be put under local anaesthetic and then a small hole (or holes) will be made in their gum which will house the implant(s). The head of the implant(s) will be positioned above the gum line so that they can anchor in crowns, bridges or dentures.  Due to the size of the mini-implant, the gum is not even required to be cut. As a result the process can take as little as half an hour and can be completed in a single visit! The healing process after surgery is also relatively quick.

Patients in Liverpool can Replace Any Missing Teeth with Long Lasting Dental Implants

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Information on dental implants

Be it the ravages of time or an unexpected fist, many perils lie in wait to take your teeth. Should the unfortunate occur, a stand in is required for both ornamental and practical reasons. Dentures have previously been the common solution, but increasingly dental implants are becoming a popular alternative as a result of their longer term effectiveness and their ability to preserve and aid surrounding healthy dental tissue.

Benefits of implants

Dental implants offer an improvement over false teeth and dental bridges in a variety of ways. Perhaps the most obvious advantage, in contrast to dentures, being functionality: A dental implant, when done correctly, should function just as well as your actual teeth, so no worrying about hard foods or inflammation of the gums. A common occurrence post-tooth loss is atrophy (the bone surrounding where tooth used to be gradually decaying) which can lead to a change in jaw shaping. A dental implant can help preserve and, in some cases, stimulate the growth of surrounding bone structure for patients in Liverpool.

The main advantage of an implant over a traditional dental bridge (another type of fake tooth) is that in the implant’s case there is no need to affect healthy surrounding teeth. Traditional bridges usually require neighbouring teeth to be etched and prepared in order to fix the replacement teeth in place using crowns.  Implants, however, require no special cleaning procedures, unlike dentures and bridges, and should be indistinguishable from your surrounding teeth.

A few requirements

Implants require a reasonable quantity and quality of bone tissue to be available from the patient, which should not be a problem for most healthy individuals. It should be noted, however, that excessive drinking and smoking can hinder the success of implant treatment.
