The Variety Of Dental Implants At Liverpool Dental Spa

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Dental implants are one of the most effective ways to replace missing teeth. They look and function just like real teeth, are cleaned like normal teeth (unlike other replacement methods) and can even  help stimulate the surrounding bone of your jaw, thus preventing the bone loss and change in facial structure associated with dentures. Unfortunately, this treatment isn’t always available to everyone, with bone density problems being the most common barrier. Thankfully, with mini-implants, at Liverpool Dental Spa we are able to provide dental implants to a wider range of people.

What are implants and how mini-implants any different?

Implants are fake teeth which are attached to your jaw, usually by a metal rod. Mini-implants, as the name implies, are just smaller versions of the same thing.

The benefits of mini-implants

Perhaps the greatest benefit of mini-implants is that they offer the benefits of standard implants, but to more people. Traditional implants can also require months of bone fusion before those replacement teeth can be fitted properly. With mini-implants, however, those replacements can be fitted on the same day! The process of fitting mini-implants is also far less invasive than convention implant treatment; gone are the incisions and drilling that can put so many off.

A variety of uses

Other mini-implants can be used for single tooth replacements, they can also be utilised to attach whole sets of teeth; 6 mini-implants, complete with screw tops, can be inserted into your jaw. Dentures can then be attached to, and removed, from these screw tops at your leisure. This is a fantastic way of overcoming the slipping issues associated with dentures, as well as accelerated bone loss: When dentures are worn without stabilised implants, they compress the gingiva and subsequently lessen the supply of blood to the bone. This causes accelerated bone loss. Dentures with mini-implants, thankfully, can stimulate the bone and help prevent this rather undesirable side-effect.

Who is suitable for the mini-implant?

Even though the mini-implant allows a wider range of people to have access to implant treatment, it is still not suitable to everybody. Heavy smoking or drinking may render you unsuitable, as will active gum disease. Come in for a check-up at Liverpool Dental Spa and we can let you know!

What Are Mini Implants And How Do They Work For Patients In Liverpool?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Mini implants are a smaller and narrower version of the traditional dental implant. They are designed to replace missing teeth or act as a means of greater retention for denture wearers, working in much the same way as the tradition system, by restoring functionality, replacing missing teeth and improving stability.

Mini implants are advantageous for the following reasons:

  • Less invasive: Beneficial to elderly patients do not wish to undergo the more invasive implant procedure.
  • Loose denture wearers: Particularly helpful to retain loose, lower dentures, which improves the ability to ear food and speak correctly.
  • Those with substantial jaw bone loss: Long-term denture wearers or those who haven’t had their missing teeth replaced will often require bone grafts before receiving implants. As the jaw bone often recedes due to denture pressure for example a bone graft is usually required for traditional dental implants. Mini implants, however, require what is known as ‘flapless surgery’, which means the small implant is placed within a small opening of the gum.
  • If waiting for dental implants: Mini implants can be used as a temporary restoration while standard implants are being created.

The minimally invasive procedure is as follows:

  1. A local anaesthetic is administered to the gums in order to counteract any form of discomfort.
  2. The durable titanium implants are fitted within the pre-drilled sockets by means of flapless surgery (no incisions required).
  3. The average amount of mini implants fitted amounts to four and this is able to support a full set of lower dentures, but this will depend on the number of missing teeth.
  4. Restorations can be fitted immediately so that your new smile can be enjoyed without delay!
  5. The procedure is usually completed within an hour.

Bone Grafting For Patients In Liverpool Needing Dental Implants

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Dental implants are the artificial replacement for tooth roots that are placed within the jaw bone. Patients wanting a dental implant would need sufficient bone mass to support the dental implant; otherwise the implant could possibly fail.  In the past, patients who did not have sufficient bone levels were deemed unable to receive the implants.  However, with the development of technology and science patients who do not have sufficient bone levels can now receive implants with the help of bone grafting.

What is Bone grafting?

The procedure of bone grafting allows the dentist to take the bone tissue from an area where there is higher density of bone and use it to increase the bone levels where there is lower density of bone. In case of bone grafting for dental implants, bone from another part of the body is added to the jawbone. Generally, bone grafts are taken from another area in the mouth or from the hip area. This procedure is only required when the dentist concludes that the patient has insufficient bone levels in the jaw.

Different Types of Bone Grafting

Out of the many types of bone grafts available today, the most commonly used is known as Autograft or Autogenous. Under this type, the bone graft is taken from another part of the patient’s body and is applied to the jaw bone. Bone grafts can also be taken from other humans, in which case it is called Allograft and when a bone graft is taken from an animal it’s called Xenograft. Alloplastic graft is the procedure during which synthetic material is used to add strength to the jaw bone.

Disadvantages of bone grafting

Even though bone grafting is an effective procedure, success is not guaranteed. After the bone graft is done, the patient will need to wait for approximately 3 to 4 months. This time period is required to allow the bone to integrate. However, this period of wait will only benefit in the long run. Patients In The Heart Of Liverpool Find Out All About Mini-Implants

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Sometimes dental implants just aren’t a viable option, often because of bone density problems. Mini-implants are a relatively new innovation in dentistry, pioneered by one Dr. Victor Sendax; a Manhattan dentist. Mini implants allow people who previously would have been unsuitable for implants to have an almost instantaneous dental restoration.

What are implants and how are mini-implants different?

A dental implant is essentially a fake tooth which is anchored in to your jaw, often by a metal rod. Mini-implants are essentially small versions of these rods which can be used on jaws with a lower bone density.

Other uses

Mini-implants can be used for more than just replacing individual teeth. They can also be used to stabilise removable dentures:  Six mini-implants with screw tops can be inserted into the jaw; your dentures can then be attached to and removed from these implants. This is a very effective way of preventing denture slippage. It also has the added benefit of overcoming a common problem with dentures: Accelerated bone loss. Dentures worn without stabilised implants compress the gingiva and reduce the blood supply to the bone, which causes accelerated bone loss. Wearing dentures with mini-implants, however, can stimulate the bone, as they are anchored in, and help prevent bone loss.

Standard procedure

The procedure is quite simple, relatively quick and not particularly invasive. The patient will be put under local anaesthetic and then a small hole (or holes) will be made in their gum which will house the implant(s). The head of the implant(s) will be positioned above the gum line so that they can anchor in crowns, bridges or dentures.  Due to the size of the mini-implant, the gum is not even required to be cut. As a result the process can take as little as half an hour and can be completed in a single visit! The healing process after surgery is also relatively quick.

What are the Numerous Benefits Patients in Central Liverpool can Experience with Dental Implants?

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and are an alternative to bridges or dentures for patients in Central Liverpool, which can cause pain if they are badly fitted or loose. Dental implants look and function like normal teeth and there is no need to change your diet or hygiene routine.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are a total replacement for a tooth, not just the visible part of the tooth but the root as well. They are inserted into a socket in the jawbone and are made from titanium, which is a very strong material that reacts well with the surrounding bone. In fact, the titanium implant and bone will fuse together in a process called osseointegration, which ensures that the tooth has a very strong and stable foundation. The operation is performed under anaesthetic, and there is a healing process of around six weeks when you will wear temporary teeth to help the healing. After this however, the new implant can last a whole lifetime!

What are the advantages of implants?

When a tooth is lost, this can often lead to damage to the surrounding jawbone material too, and the bone will eventually begin to atrophy if the tooth remains missing. In other words, the jawbone will begin to disappear. This is a problem for people with dentures, and jawbone loss can change the shape of the mouth, leading to a more aged appearance. However, dental implants, which fuse with the jawbone, can actually stimulate bone growth, removing this problem altogether. What’s more, implants require no change to be made to your eating or dental hygiene habits, as they function and look like other teeth. Implants are also made independently of other teeth, unlike with crowns, where healthy teeth may need to be treated too.

Straumann Dental Implants for a Smile in Liverpool that Could Last a Lifetime

Friday, June 1st, 2012

If you’re missing teeth then dental implants may be the treatment you need to give you back the smile you have lost. At Liverpool Dental Implant and Aesthetics Spa we use Straumann dental implants, one of the best dental implants available, to ensure that our dental implants can last a lifetime.

Why are Straumann Dental Implants so well regarded?

The Straumann Dental Implant company spends a portion of all profits made on the continued research of dental implants, which means they have found the best ways to both produce and place dental implants, for long-lasting, life-like results.

Some of the most effective methods of placing implants that Straumann have found include etching the surface of their implants to promote faster and more secure bonding with the jawbone and placing the implant without covering it with gum tissue. Both of these Straumann methods enhance the recovery time and the fusion of the implant, for strong, long-lasting results.

What can Straumann Dental implants be used with?

Straumann dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth with a crown, several missing teeth with a bridge or all missing teeth with a denture. Once your dental implant has been placed it will take 3-6 months to fully heal, after which your permanent restoration will be attached to the dental implants.

Backed by clinical research and with a proven success rate of around 95 per cent over the last 10 years, the Straumann Dental Implant has become the choice of many UK implant dentists in recent years.

If you are interested in dental implants to stabilise your smile please call the practice today to arrange an appointment. We provide dental implant services for patients in Liverpool and throughout the UK using Straumann dental implants, with many happy, smiling customers.

Patients in Liverpool with Loose Dentures can Experience a Stronger Smile with Dental Implants

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Patients in Liverpool with ill-fitting or loose dentures may suffer with a daily struggle when eating, speaking and even smiling. Loose dentures can cause a host of problems including bone degeneration due to the continual wearing down of the supporting bone tissue. This wear is what causes dentures to become even looser and many patients will go through a number of dentures during their lifetime to maintain some kind of function.

What can be done about loose dentures?

However, with dental implant stabilised dentures patients can experience a solid and strong smile again, meaning they can eat what they want and never fear the embarrassment of dentures falling out of their mouth.

What does the dental implant treatment involve?

Implants are fitted into your jawbone in specific areas, which provide the best support from your denture. The titanium posts are then left to fuse with your jawbone, to ensure that you have a strong, secure foundation for your denture. Once your implants have integrated with your jawbone your denture can be fitted into place, for a strong, stable smile.

What are the main benefits of dental implant stabilised dentures?

Patients with stabilised dentures can experience many benefits, including:

  • A strong set of teeth they can use to eat anything, meaning their diet doesn’t suffer because of their teeth.
  • Teeth that remain within the mouth, never falling out and causing your embarrassment.
  • Strong and healthy jawbone tissue, which is strengthened rather than worn away.
  • Long-lasting smiles, with dental implants lasting for many years, if not a lifetime, if they are well maintained.

If you would like more information on stabilising your dentures using dental implants please call the practice today, we will be happy to hear from you.

Patients in Liverpool can Replace Any Missing Teeth with Long Lasting Dental Implants

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Information on dental implants

Be it the ravages of time or an unexpected fist, many perils lie in wait to take your teeth. Should the unfortunate occur, a stand in is required for both ornamental and practical reasons. Dentures have previously been the common solution, but increasingly dental implants are becoming a popular alternative as a result of their longer term effectiveness and their ability to preserve and aid surrounding healthy dental tissue.

Benefits of implants

Dental implants offer an improvement over false teeth and dental bridges in a variety of ways. Perhaps the most obvious advantage, in contrast to dentures, being functionality: A dental implant, when done correctly, should function just as well as your actual teeth, so no worrying about hard foods or inflammation of the gums. A common occurrence post-tooth loss is atrophy (the bone surrounding where tooth used to be gradually decaying) which can lead to a change in jaw shaping. A dental implant can help preserve and, in some cases, stimulate the growth of surrounding bone structure for patients in Liverpool.

The main advantage of an implant over a traditional dental bridge (another type of fake tooth) is that in the implant’s case there is no need to affect healthy surrounding teeth. Traditional bridges usually require neighbouring teeth to be etched and prepared in order to fix the replacement teeth in place using crowns.  Implants, however, require no special cleaning procedures, unlike dentures and bridges, and should be indistinguishable from your surrounding teeth.

A few requirements

Implants require a reasonable quantity and quality of bone tissue to be available from the patient, which should not be a problem for most healthy individuals. It should be noted, however, that excessive drinking and smoking can hinder the success of implant treatment.
