How We Detect Tooth Decay In Central Liverpool

Thursday, March 27th, 2014

Tooth decay is one of the most common preventable illnesses. Often, the symptoms of decay only become noticeable once the condition has become advanced and requires treatment and this is why regular dental checks are so important.

Check-ups and tooth decay

When you come for a dental check-up, your dentist will use magnification and powerful lighting to examine your mouth thoroughly and search for any signs of decay and gum disease. Your dentist will be able to spot the very early signs of tooth decay, which enables them to treat the problem before it gets any worse. Dental X-rays can also be used to identify potential problems, which may not be visible to the naked eye.

What can be done for a decayed tooth?

If your dentist spots the early signs of tooth decay they may suggest filling the cavity; fillings help to make the tooth stronger, but they also prevent the spread of decay through the tooth, which saves you from suffering more pain and eliminates the need for more intensive treatment.

What are the symptoms of tooth decay?

The most common signs of tooth decay include discolouration of the tooth, tooth pain and sensitivity, which commonly causes discomfort when you eat or drink hot or cold foods. Decay can also cause the tooth to feel weak when you use it to chew up food and you may be able to spot a hole in the tooth surface in some cases.

Preventing tooth decay

Prevention is always better than cure and simply spending a few minutes cleaning your teeth each day and ensuring you see your dentist for a check-up every 6 months will do wonders for your oral health. Your diet is also important; eating sugary foods on a regular basis increases the risk of cavities, so try to limit the amount of sugar you eat and avoid grazing throughout the day to allow your tooth enamel to rest and recover after eating.

We Look After The Whole Family’s Teeth In Central Liverpool

Monday, March 24th, 2014

At Liverpool Dental Spa, we welcome patients of all ages and we offer a comprehensive range of general and preventative dental treatments to promote good oral health and prevent oral diseases. We encourage our patients to come for regular check-ups and have experience in caring for children.

Children’s oral health

Oral health is really important for children and we encourage parents to brig their children for regular check-ups from the age of 12 months old. The earlier children see a dentist, the better. Tooth decay is among the most common preventable illnesses among children and regular dental appointments help to reduce the risk of children developing cavities and suffering from toothache. Good oral health during the childhood years stands children in good stead for the future and helps to eliminate problems caused by premature tooth loss.

Visiting a dentist at an early age also enables children to get used to the sights and sounds of the dental surgery, which helps to reduce the risk of dental anxiety in the future. We understand that a dental surgery may appear a bit scary to little people, but we do all we can to make them feel relaxed and help them to have fun while they are with us. We want them to look forward to coming to see us and our friendly team will always go the extra mile to make them feel welcome and help them to overcome any nerves.

Preventative dental treatments for children

We are very much of the opinion that prevention is better than cure and we offer treatments to help to protect the teeth and lower the risk of tooth wear and decay. Our treatments include fissure sealant treatment, which is designed to prevent bacteria and food from getting stuck in the grooves of the teeth, and fluoride varnish treatment, which strengthens the tooth enamel.

We also offer a full range of general dental and hygiene treatments for adult patients.

We Know How To Look After And Treat Nervous Patients In Liverpool City Centre

Thursday, March 13th, 2014

At Liverpool Dental Spa we know that some of our patients feel very apprehensive before they have dental treatment and we always go the extra mile to help them to relax. We understand that dental anxiety and dental phobia are common issues and we offer a range of treatments and techniques, including sedation, to make the treatment process more manageable. Our aim is to help you to feel calm and confident and to ensure that you don’t feel any pain or anxiety during your treatment.

What is sedation and how could it help me?

Sedation is a very popular treatment for nervous patients; it involves using sedative medication to help patients to feel more relaxed and to prevent them from feeling pain during a dental procedure. Sedation is not the same as general anaesthetic or ‘being put to sleep’; rather than losing consciousness, you will simply feel a little drowsy and very relaxed. Under sedation, patients are able to talk to their dentist and hear them, but they will not feel any pain or have much recollection of what happened during treatment.

If you suffer from anxiety or you are very worried about having a specific procedure, you could benefit from sedation. Sedation enables you to have the treatment you need without feeling scared or nervous and it is also very helpful for those who need complex treatment and those with a sensitive gag reflex.

After treatment

After treatment it takes a little while for the effects of the sedative to wear off fully and we encourage our patients to come to their appointment with a friend or relative and to arrange a lift home. After sedation it is advisable to avoid drinking alcohol, exercising and operating machinery for at least 24 hours.

If you have been putting off dental treatment as a result of dental anxiety or dental phobia, we can help! Our friendly, experienced team can help you to overcome your fears and get the treatment you need in a comfortable and relaxing setting.

The Ins And Outs Of Mini Dental Implant Treatment For Missing Teeth In The Heart Of Liverpool

Thursday, March 6th, 2014

Dental implants have become an increasingly popular treatment for patients with missing teeth in Liverpool and we are delighted to offer traditional implants and mini dental implants.

What are mini dental implants?

Mini dental implants are smaller versions of traditional dental implants, which are often beneficial for patients who are unable to tolerate standard implants as a result of a lack of density in the jaw bone tissue.

Mini implants enable patients with low bone density to benefit from implant treatment and they also facilitate immediate treatment. Normally, implant treatment takes several months because the standard implant needs time to integrate into the bone tissue before the restoration is attached; however, with mini implants, treatment can be completed in a single day.

The procedure

The procedure to fit mini dental implants is normally carried out under local anaesthetic or sedation. The implant is placed inside a small opening in the jaw bone, with the head of the implant positioned above the gum line. Once the mini implant is in place, the new restoration is attached to the head of the implant.

Unlike the procedure for traditional implants, the gum tissue does not have to be cut in this case; the implants are placed directly into the jaw bone through the gum tissue. This means that the risk of infection is lower, the healing time is much shorter and there is no need for patients to worry about pain.

What are the benefits of mini implants?

Mini implants are smaller than standard implants, but they offer many of the same benefits and are suitable for patients who would maybe not be the best candidates for traditional implant treatment. The procedure to fit mini implants is simpler and quicker and the restoration can be attached straight away, so there is no need for multiple dental visits and patients can enjoy all the benefits of treatment and their new smile immediately.

Mini implants also negate the need for invasive treatment, as they are specifically designed to fit directly into the jaw bone through the gum tissue.

Mini implants are also versatile, as they can be connected to a single crown, a dental bridge or a denture.

The Ins And Outs Of Mini Dental Implant Treatment For Missing Teeth In The Heart Of Liverpool

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

Dentistry has a lengthy and illustrious history, but, if you were alive during its early advancements, you would’ve only had one option for replacing missing teeth: Dentures. Although certainly an improvement over no teeth at all, dentures are certainly not without fault: The fear of slippage, difficulty talking, being unable to eat hard foods, the list goes on & on… Thankfully, in the modern era, we now have dental implants, perhaps the closest we have come thus far in dentistry to replicating a real tooth as a replacement. Sadly, conventional implants sometimes aren’t possible for people as a result of bone density issues. Thankfully, mini implants can be used on far more people than their conventional counterparts…

Firstly, what is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a false tooth attached to a small metal rod. The rod is then attached to your gums.

What are the advantages of conventional implants?

They essentially function just like real teeth.

What are the advantages of the mini ones?

Well, aside from the aforementioned increased applicability of them, they are also quicker to fit than other treatments (including conventional implants): Standard implants can take months of preparation, whilst the miniature ones can be done in just a single day! The procedure is also far less invasive than with the conventional implant procedure.

Added benefits

But that’s not all! Alongside replacing single teeth, mini implants can also be used, in a set of six, to replace a whole mouthful of teeth! A set of dentures can be fixed to a set of six implants, thus overcoming all the common denture related problems cited in my introduction.

 Talk to us

Losing a tooth is never fun, but we offer a form of replacement which will give the highest functionality and the more realistic appearance possible in a replacement. If mini implants might be right for you, please call for a consultation at Liverpool Dental Spa.

Introducing The Perfect Clear Treatment In The Heart Of Liverpool

Monday, February 24th, 2014

Fixed braces are effective, but, according to that ever shifting mix of cultural norms which designate desirability, they aren’t particularly attractive. As a result, some people can get a little self conscious about seeking orthodontic treatment. Given that dental phobia affects a lot of people already, letting appearances put people off treatment is just something that dentistry cannot allow! Thankfully, for those who prefer a more subtle form of brace treatment, there is the Perfect Clear aligner system.

What is Perfect Clear?

Perfect Clear is a system of nigh-on invisible, clear, plastic aligners which gradually shift a user’s teeth into alignment.

The particular perks of Perfect Clear

The name kind of hints at their major selling point: These awesome aligners are practically invisible and, as such, overcome any of that brace related embarrassment you might be imagining. They do, however, come with a bunch of practical benefits too! The aligners, for instance, are removable, meaning that they can be taken out for cleaning, thus preventing food from building up in hard to reach areas and meaning that you can clean them conventionally. No specialist brace equipment is needed for Perfect Clear users! Plus, you can eat what you please: conventional braces can break or be damaged if certain foods are consumed. Being able to remove your aligners at meal times eliminates any need to alter your diet. The absence of any wire or elastic also means that they will sit more comfortably in your mouth, and, as a bonus, you will be less likely to get any abscesses around your mouth. Less work is also required to maintain them than with fixed braces.

Are there downsides?

For some, Perfect Clear has been known to have a marginal impact on a user’s speech, an effect often resembling a lisp, which can last for a few days. Users will, however, adapt to the aligners swiftly and the issues should vanish quite quickly.

We Know How To Look After And Treat Nervous Patients In Liverpool City Centre

Tuesday, February 11th, 2014

True horror lies beyond the rational, and phobias are, in their very nature, irrational. Even if sympathising with such extreme and, often unjustified, fears is difficult, recognising the horror of a phobia’s impact is less of a stretch: People who are afraid of the dentist might literally do anything to avoid visiting one and, subsequently, they live a life without dental care, often letting their teeth rot in to a plaque riddled mess of yellowing husk, exposed roots ad gingivitis. If you don’t visit the dentist, you don’t get your teeth checked, and if you don’t get your teeth checked then horrible things can happen to them. This attitude isn’t rare either: Over three quarters of our American brethren suffer some kind of dental anxiety, whilst 10% – 20% suffer with the crippling stuff. In Britain, around a quarter of the population admit to being scared of the dentist (and that’s just those that admit it)! How do you helps someone through such agonising fear and into to the dental chair? Well, we recommend intravenous sedation.

What is this intravenous sedation?

It is a safe sedative which is administered via a small injection. Application of the sedative will occur before any other procedures and it will make those who use it feel calm and content. Given that it will make you drowsy, do remember to have a friend around afterwards to pick you up! Don’t worry tough, it won’t put you to sleep: You’ll still be able to interact and respond to your dentist, though you may struggle to remember doing so afterwards.

How does it work?

As the name implies, it works via injection. If you also suffer from the, rather common, fear of needles, please talk to a staff member as alternative treatments may be able to be provided. The sedative is applied via a super thin needle and the vein in to which it will be injected will be very close to the surface of your skin. Dental sedation has proved such a hit that it is also being used as a substitute to a conventional anaesthetic in some treatments!

Our staff want to help and are willing to work with you to make that possible. If you have any fears, please do not hesitate to contact us.
