5 Helpful Tips to Make Your Smile Sparkle

May 17th, 2017

Most of us consider our smile our most important and attractive feature. If you’re keen to ensure your smile sparkles for years to come, here are 5 helpful tips to bear in mind:

  1. Perfect your brushing technique: you may brush your teeth religiously, but are you sure that you’re doing it right? When you’re brushing, you should use small circular motions and ensure you cover every surface of every tooth. It’s best to go for a brush with a small head so that you can reach right into the corners of your mouth.
  2. Swap your brush every 3 months: if your toothbrush is worn, you may not be getting the rewards of regular brushing. Make sure you change your brush or the brush head if you an electric toothbrush, every 3 months.
  3. Book a dental hygiene treatment: even if you do a thorough job every time you clean your teeth, you won’t be able to achieve the intensive clean our hygienists can with their powerful modern hygiene treatments. Seeing a hygienist on a regular basis can prevent oral diseases, as well as making your tooth look whiter and brighter.
  4. Use a straw: if you’re a fan of drinks that contain staining agents, such as cola, it’s a good idea to use a straw when drinking. This helps to prevent contact between staining agents and the tooth enamel. It’s also a good idea to avoid swilling the liquid around your mouth.
  5. Chew sugar-free gum: chewing sugar-free gum after eating can help to stimulate saliva production and wash away any food debris and bacteria.

How do you Take Care of a Broken Tooth?

May 15th, 2017

If you have a broken tooth, don’t despair! We have a range of treatment options available to restore your tooth and put a smile back on your face.

What causes broken teeth?

Your teeth are incredibly strong, but they’re not unbreakable. General wear and tear, accidents and injuries can all take their toll. You may also find that your teeth are more susceptible to damage if you have weak teeth as a result of poor oral hygiene or you’ve sustained dental injuries in the past.

Mending broken teeth

If you think you might have broken a tooth or you’ve started experiencing increased sensitivity or dental pain, give us a call and we will arrange an appointment for you as soon as possible. When you come and see us, your dentist will examine your mouth, and they may do an X-ray if they suspect that the tooth is fractured.

If the tooth is chipped, we can often repair it with a filling or a procedure called composite bonding. Bonding uses dental composite, a tooth-coloured material, to patch up and reshape the teeth. The process takes an hour, there’s no pain involved, no injections and no drilling, and your smile will look perfect again.

If the tooth is broken, we may recommend fitting a new crown. Crowns are restorations, which are used to strengthen the teeth when they are either damaged or decayed. A crown is also known as a cap because it is placed over the top of the tooth. Before you have a crown, your tooth will be prepared; this involves removing any decayed tissue and shaping the tooth ready for crowning. We will create a mould of the tooth, and this will be used to create your bespoke crown. We can make crowns from precious metals or ceramics. Ceramic crowns are very popular because they provide very natural looking aesthetics.

If you’ve got a broken tooth, call us today and we’ll have you on the mend in no time!

Did You Know Liverpool Dental Spa Can Help You Kiss Bad Breath Goodbye?

May 10th, 2017

Bad breath is a very common problem, but knowing this probably won’t make you feel any better if you lack confidence in social situations or you’re very conscious about your bad breath. If you do suffer from halitosis, our expert team at Liverpool Dental Spa could help you to kiss goodbye to bad breath for good.

What causes bad breath?

It’s very common to have bad breath when you wake up in the morning or you eat foods that have a very intense flavour, like garlic or onions. If you have bad breath in these scenarios, there’s probably nothing to worry about. However, if bad breath is a constant problem, there may be an underlying cause. Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of bad breath. If you don’t brush and floss, this causes bacteria to gather in your mouth. Oral bacteria release gases when they feed, and these gases have an unpleasant odour. Smoking and taking some forms of medication can also increase the risk of bad breath.

Tackling bad breath

In most cases, you’ll find that bad breath disappears when you clean your teeth or you chew sugar-free gum after eating. However, if you suffer from persistent bad breath, we recommend making an appointment with our dental hygienists. Bad breath often stems from collections of bacteria, most commonly on the tongue, and intensive cleaning treatments can cleanse the mouth, remove harmful bacteria and give you fresh breath. We also recommend sticking to a good daily oral hygiene regime at home and avoiding foods that you know give you bad breath. It can also be useful to carry sugar-free gum in your bag.

If bad breath is getting you down, give us a call now! We have many years of experience in treating halitosis and we can help you banish bad breath for good.

Top Tips for Ensuring Your Wisdom Teeth Don’t Cause Problems

May 8th, 2017

If you flinch when you hear the words wisdom and teeth in the same sentence, you’re not alone. Many people experience problems with their wisdom teeth. In some cases, the wisdom teeth erupt with no problem at all, but in others, they can be troublesome. Here are some top tips to help you ensure that your wisdom teeth don’t cause problems and some advice to help you out if you do have pain.

Seeing your dentist

When you have a check-up, your dentist won’t just be looking out for signs of gum disease and cavities. They’ll also look at how your teeth are developing. This means that any issues related to your bite (orthodontic issues) or your wisdom teeth, can be spotted early. If your dentist thinks that your wisdom teeth are going to cause problems, they may be able to act before you start experiencing pain. If the jaw is very small or the teeth are already crowded, for example, it may be useful to extract the teeth before they become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth often result from a lack of space in the jaw, which causes the tooth to start pushing against the neighbouring tooth. Ideally, we recommend check-ups every 6-9 months, but if you do have any pain in between sessions, don’t hesitate to call and make an appointment earlier.

Maintaining good oral hygiene

Sometimes, wisdom tooth pain is caused by infection, which can be prevented by good oral hygiene. Due to the location of the wisdom teeth, it can be very difficult to reach them to clean them properly, and this increases the risk of decay. If your wisdom teeth are developing, make sure you reach right into the corners of the mouth with your toothbrush.

Dealing with dental pain

If your wisdom teeth are giving you grief and you haven’t been to see your dentist, give us a call now. It’s best to get things checked out, just in case it looks like there are going to be issues further down the line. It’s common to have pain when your wisdom teeth are coming through, but sometimes, they can cause major problems, and it may be best to extract them before the situation gets any worse. If you’ve got pain, you can also take over the counter painkillers and use ice packs to make you feel more comfortable.

What is Cosmetic Bonding and How Could it Give You a Personalised Perfect smile?

May 3rd, 2017

Do you wish you had a perfect smile? Have you got chipped teeth or gaps between your teeth? If so, we can offer you an incredible treatment, which can transform your smile and give you a perfect, personalised set of pearly whites without any pain at all. Here’s everything you need to know about cosmetic bonding.

What is cosmetic bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is also known as composite or dental bonding. This is a cosmetic procedure, which also has restorative benefits, and we use it to reshape and repair chipped, damaged and worn teeth. We can also use bonding to reduce the size of gaps between the teeth, giving you an affordable, quick alternative to veneers and orthodontic treatment.

How does cosmetic bonding work?

Bonding is a straightforward treatment, which we can usually complete in less than an hour. You won’t feel any pain, and you’ll be amazed at the difference an hour in the dental chair can make to the appearance of your smile.

Cosmetic bonding requires a high level of skill on the part of the dentist, and you’ll be pleased to hear that our experienced dentists are experts when it comes to creating beautiful smiles. To achieve a flawless aesthetic, your dentist will use composite, a tooth-coloured material, to reshape the teeth, build up worn edges, fill in chips and reduce gaps between the teeth. Dental composite is putty-like in consistency and this enables your dentist to shape and mould it for a variety of uses. It also comes in a range of shades, so your dentist will choose the closest match to your natural tooth colour for seamless results.

Once your dentist is happy with the placement of the composite, they will ask you to pop some goggles on and they will shine a curing light onto the teeth. This sets the composite, making it firm.

If you’re looking for an affordable, quick, and pain-free way of getting a gorgeous smile for summer, call us today or get in touch via our website to find out more about dental bonding.

How to Stop Snoring and Sleep Peacefully

May 1st, 2017

Is your partner at the end of their tether? Has snoring become an issue that you’re constantly arguing about, or is your household desperate for a peaceful night’s sleep? Snoring often has a greater impact on your partner, but that doesn’t stop it affecting you. You may not even know that you snore, but that won’t stop you from feeling guilty when your other half is awake all night. If you’re keen to restore peace to your household, here are some ways we can help.

What causes snoring?

Many people find that they snore when they have a cough or a cold or after they’ve been drinking. It’s also more common to snore when you sleep on your back rather than your side. If you snore from time to time, this is perfectly normal, but if snoring is persistent, this can be a sign that your body is struggling to get enough oxygen while you’re asleep. Being overweight, smoking and allergies can all increase the risk of frequent snoring.

How can we help you?

You may think it’s odd to seek advice from a dentist if you snore, but we are experts in treating snoring and we can help you to get back on track and enable your other half to get that uninterrupted sleep they crave. We treat snoring by providing you with a custom-made bite guard, which is designed to increase air flow while you sleep by opening up the airway. It does this by moving the lower jaw forward slightly and holding it in this position. The bite guard is made to fit your mouth, and you shouldn’t find it uncomfortable.

If snoring is making life at home a misery, now is the time to give us a call. We are here to help and hopefully, we’ll have you sleeping soundly in no time at all!

Detecting Gum Disease: What We Can Do and How You Can Help

April 28th, 2017

Did you know that gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss for adults in the UK? The good news is that gum disease is preventable. If you have signs of gum disease, we can help. We can also provide information to help you keep symptoms at bay if you’re keen to learn more about preventing gum disease.

Preventing gum disease

The best scenario is always to prevent gum disease from developing in the first place. Gum disease is caused by plaque. Plaque contains harmful oral bacteria, which release acids when they feed. These acids irritate your gums and cause them to become sore and inflamed. The best way to prevent plaque from forming is to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day using fluoride toothpaste for at least 2 minutes. We also recommend flossing, and avoiding eating foods and drinks that are high in sugar. Regular dental visits will also help to reduce your risk of developing gum disease. If you’re a smoker, you can also lower your risk by quitting smoking. If you’d like to try and give up, we can help, so don’t think twice about getting in touch.

Watching out for the symptoms of gum disease

The problem with gum disease is that it can develop fairly quickly, and that’s why it’s so important to be aware of the early warning signs. If you have mild gum disease, or gingivitis, we can treat this with hygiene treatments and better oral hygiene at home. If gum disease isn’t treated, it becomes more serious and it can eventually lead to tooth loss. The most common signs to watch out for include:

  • Bleeding gums (you’ll usually notice this when you brush your teeth)
  • Swollen gums
  • Increased redness in the gums
  • Tenderness and pain in and around the gums

If you spot these signs, call us and book an appointment. We will do our best to prevent any further damage and have your gums healthy again as quickly as possible.

Four Everyday Things You Can Do To Make Your Teeth Shine

April 26th, 2017

Who doesn’t want a sparkling smile for summer? If you’re keen to make your teeth shine, there are lots of easy steps you can take. Here are just four things you can do to give your smile a healthy glow:

  1. Learn to brush properly: most of us brush our teeth without even thinking about it. It’s part of our daily routine, and we may not give it much attention, especially if it’s one of those days when you’re running late and there’s lots to do. The reality is that brushing is really important, not just for your health, but also for your appearance. If you brush properly, you’ll reduce your risk of decay and gum disease, and your smile will look brighter and whiter.
  2. Give up your cola and coffee habit: do you rely on a coffee to fuel you in the mornings or are you keen on cola? If so, these habits are bound to take their toll on your smile. Both of these popular drinks contain staining agents. If you can’t kick the habit completely, try and cut down and drink through a straw. Wash your mouth out with water immediately after drinking.
  3. See your dentist: if you haven’t seen your dentist in a while, make today the day you call up and arrange a check-up. It’s so important for your health to have regular checks, but seeing your dentist can also improve the look of your smile. When you go to the clinic, your dentist will polish your teeth, and you’ll leave with a beaming, bright smile.
  4. Set a timer: are you guilty of rushing your daily clean? If you spend a few seconds guiding your brush around your teeth, you’re not going to do a very effective job of keeping harmful bacteria and plaque at bay. To do a proper job, you need to devote at least 2 minutes to cleaning. Set a timer on your brush, or if you don’t have one, use your watch or phone.

Five Tooth Friendly Foods

April 24th, 2017

It’s common to hear dentists talking about foods that are bad for your teeth, but what about the foods that are super for your smile? If you’re hoping to improve your diet, here are 5 tooth-friendly foods:

  1. Cheese: cheese is often one of the first things to be sacrificed when you go on a diet to lose weight, but it’s really good for your teeth. Cheese is rich in calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth, and it’s also alkaline, which helps to reduce acidity in the mouth.
  2. Yoghurt: yoghurt is another great source of calcium, and it’s a much healthier dessert option than cakes, biscuits or chocolate bars. If you are eating yoghurt, make sure you go for natural yoghurt, rather than sweetened, flavoured versions, which are filled with sugar. If you’re keen to liven up your pudding, add a spoonful of honey, a chopped banana or some fresh blueberries or raspberries.
  3. Leafy green vegetables: leafy green vegetables offer a host of health benefits. They contain calcium, which is great news for your teeth, and they’re rich in fibre and sugar-free.
  4. Raw carrots: if you’re in need of a healthy snack, which will benefit your teeth and gums, look no further than raw vegetables like carrots. These foods contain barely any sugar and the chewing motion increases the production of saliva, which reduces acidity in the mouth, and also gives your mouth a good clean.
  5. Eggs: eggs are a really versatile food, which are packed with protein. They also contain phosphorous, which is good for your enamel.

If you need more healthy eating tips, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist.
