Treating Broken Teeth With Composite Bonding

January 30th, 2014

Rabbit’s teeth grow continually, requiring them to chew foods which will grind them down. If they aren’t worn down via chewing, these teeth will slowly start to resemble tusks. Human teeth don’t quite grow at such an accelerated rate, meaning that the gradual wear and tear of the daily chew can, in fact, lead to cracks and chips in those pearly whites. In a slightly less subtle way, accidents and injuries can also produce similar, and even far more extreme, results. But what can one do in such a scenario? Well, thankfully, we at Liverpool Dental Spa offer a little thing called ‘composite bonding’.

What is this ‘composite bonding?’

It is a technique that has been used in dental practices for a lengthy period of time. It essentially involves the skilful, sculptural use of ‘dental composite’ material, a substance with a consistency akin to a paste which is made up of several varieties of resin and filler. This material is essentially used to correct the cracks and breaks in your tooth or teeth.

A standard procedure

Typically, you will only need to make one trip to the dental practice. Most of the time, patients don’t even require an anaesthetic! Once it has been decided whether an anaesthetic will be required. Once that has been dealt with, the anaesthetic either will or won’t be administered and then your tooth will be cleaned with meticulous precision: composite bonding material demands a clean surface with which to bond. Once a suitable shade of material is selected, your tooth will then be prepped with either a rubber band or a myriad of cotton balls so as to keep it dry. The etching of the surface of your tooth will then commence with the use of a special gel which will aid the bonding process. The composite material is then applied to your chosen tooth and then said tooth is shown to a unique light which will activate the composite so as to help it strengthen and set. Additional composite material is then by put, in smaller applications, until your longed-for look and shape is brought in to reality.

Start The New Year Looking A More Youthful Looking You

January 28th, 2014

A new year can be as much a new beginning as it can a reminder of the years that have passed: In one annual celebration, ageing and rejuvenation align. If you’d rather spend 2014 focusing on refreshment and rebirth than ruminating on your own mortality, then perhaps a little external tinkering might clear your head of those superficial signs of ageing. At Liverpool Dental Spa we now offer Botox treatment and will be happy to help in this regard!

So, what exactly is Botox?

I’m glad you asked: despite Botox being one of the most famous cosmetic treatments available, most people don’t actually know anything about it beyond its distorted portrayals in contemporary sitcoms. Technically, Botox is a safe to use toxin which, if administered to a desired area in tiny amounts, can relax muscles. Botox can be used to treat a variety of issues, including chattering teeth and problems stemming from motor neuron disease, but, in a cosmetic context, it tends to treat facial wrinkles.

So how does Botox help your face’s appearance?

Wrinkles are caused by muscle movement. If you minimise muscle movement you less wrinkles and, as discussed before, Botox reduces muscle movement.

Will it be painful?

Some small discomfort is possible during treatment, but the needle used is very small and the amount of ache it causes should be negligible.

What does treatment entail?

Well, what it does entail is done quickly: A typical Botox administration takes roughly 10 minutes. Essentially, Botox is just injected in to a place where you desire its effects. Once administered, the effects should be noticeable after a few days and continual improvements should then continue to appear for about a month after that. The effects will sustain themselves for roughly 4 months, after that you will require a Botox top-up if you want to maintain your new look.

Will my face be paralyzed by it?

That is a myth, plain and simple: Botox minimises, it does not freeze, muscle movement. You know that extreme look of relief on your face? You’ll still be able to do that after Botox. The worst you’ll get is a little stiffness for a few days after treatment has been completed.

Dealing With Dental Phobia In The Heart Of Liverpool

January 23rd, 2014

It is hard to argue with that which is not rational, and phobias, by their very nature, are irrational. As a result, alternative methods to reasoning need to be concocted in order to coax out the myriad of silent and not-so-silent sufferers of dental phobia from under their certainly-not-a-dental-practice places of hiding. In all seriousness, dental phobia is a serious matter: In America, for instance, at least three quarters of the general public suffer with some kind of dental fear, whilst somewhere around 10% and 20% of Americans suffer from dental phobia so crippling that they refuse to go to checkups and surgeries. Not doing so, of course, will allow problems to run unchecked and will seriously impact one’s oral health. That those figures are from across the pond shouldn’t be a comfort either: according to the British Dental Foundation, around a quarter of people will publicly admit to being scared of the dentist and many more are speculated to be afraid of admitting those fears. So, the question remains: how do you deal with an irrational fear which can impact one so terribly? Well, at Liverpool Dental Spa we like to use intravenous dental sedation…

What is this intravenous sedation?

Fear not, it is safe as houses. The sedative would be administered before any procedures would begin and it should make you feel calm and contented. You will not fall asleep and will still be able to interact with the dentist. Other’s have compared the feeling produced by sedation to being a little tipsy, so it is a good idea to have a friend on call afterwards (sort of like a designated driver).

How does it work?

To be frank: via injection. If you also have a fear of needles, please talk to one of our staff as some alternatives may be able to be provided. The sedative is applied via a very thin needle that is used on a vein, which is incredibly close to the surface of your skin. Dental sedation is proving so popular that it is even being used as an alternative to a traditional anaesthetic during treatments!

Our friendly and attentive staff are always willing to hear your concerns and will endeavour to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

Banish Teeth Stains With Our Whitening Treatments In Central Liverpool

January 21st, 2014

Some people keep their furniture wrapped in plastic to stop it from staining as use tends to result in marking. Sadly, that principle applies to teeth: if you use your teeth, they will end up losing their pearly-white sheen. Now, using your teeth is inevitable, so, rather than come up with ways of avoiding that, we need to investigate ways of sprucing up the old gnashers after they’ve been stained as a result of general wear and tear. How can this be done, you ask? Well, with one of the wondrous tooth whitening systems available from us at Liverpool Dental Spa of course!

What are tooth whitening treatments?

There isn’t anything too clever going here, it is exactly what it says on the tin: a treatment which will make your teeth whiter. How exactly this is done, however, differs from treatment to treatment…

The Wy10 whitening system

The Wy10 whitening system is a home whitening system, meaning it is done over a longer period of time in the comfort of your own residence. This system is also particularly suited for those with sensitive teeth! The final results from the system can leave your teeth looking up to 14 times brighter than when they started and, to top it all off, this system even comes with its own portable bleaching lamp so as to improve the procedure’s outcome.

Zoom! Power Whitening

‘Zoom’ is correct as, with this treatment, speed is the name of the game: Great results with this system can be achieved after one, 45 minute visit to us! Using a combination of bleaching gel and a patented activation light, the Zoom system can leave your teeth looking up to 7 shades lighter than when you walked in. The speed of this in-house treatment makes it ideal for those with busy lifestyles.

Enlighten Teeth Whitening

Just like the spiritual zenith implied by its name, the Enlighten Teeth Whitening system can take your teeth to the lofty plains of B1 shade teeth (the brightest shade in the UK). Not only that, but it is also perfect for patients with sensitive teeth! This is a home whitening system and it achieves its incredible via a two week course of gradual deep bleaching, all of which can be done in your pyjamas

The Benefits Of Modern Fixed Braces In The City Of Liverpool

January 16th, 2014

Fixed braces have gained a negative, and much undue, reputation: Rather than conjuring images of versatility and reliability, fixed braces are, for some reason, associated with 80’s teen-comedy outcasts, much like the pun is associated with bad-uncle jokes. Punning was good enough for Shakespeare, James Joyce and Jesus and, if we are to take this comparison to its natural conclusion, fixed braces are equally appropriate for the most sophisticated pundit. Allow me to argue my case.

Firstly, what is a fixed brace?

A fixed brace is a brace which, during treatment, is not removed and they are available in a myriad of shapes, colours and constructs! All fixed braces consist of tiny buttons, referred to as brackets, which are fixed to your teeth. Metallic rings, known as bands, can also be fastened to your back teeth. A thin wire, called ‘archwire’, is then used to keep all this together along with the help of some tiny elastic bands, called modules, or some minute wires, known as ligatures.

That’s nice and all, but why opt for them?

Well, research indicates they are more effective: A recent study implied that patients who received fixed brace treatment where happier with the outcome of their smile than those who used alternatives. Importantly, they also take some crushing responsibility away from their wearer: Removable aligners, the main competitor with fixed braces, can be taken out for eating food, cleaning them or for brief social occasions. If you forget to put them back in, however, you can set your treatment back by a substantial amount and incur greater costs. With fixed braces, you never run this risk as they can’t be taken out!

Low-friction variants

The friction of fixed braces is a common, albeit minor, complaint as it can cause some slight irritation. At Liverpool Dental Spa, we offer Damon and In-Ovation R braces which not only reduce the friction issue, but can also reduce treatment time.

Replace Missing Teeth With A Permanent Solution In Liverpool

January 14th, 2014

Halloween is now long behind us, as are the costume based benefits of missing teeth. Outside of dressing up like a pirate from the scurvy era, there isn’t really a reason to leave a tooth un-replaced and doing so can, in fact, lead to a plethora of problems: Teeth keep other teeth in place and, by not replacing a missing tooth, the surrounding teeth will collapse into each other; not replacing a tooth can also increase the chance of contracting gum disease. Given that replacing the tooth is imperative, you then have to decide how to! Dentures have been the classic method for over two millennia, but they also have numerous negatives associated with them, such as slippage and an inability to chew hard foods. Dental implants, however, operate just like real teeth…

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a false tooth which is anchored in to your jaw by a small but sturdy metal rod.

The benefits of dental implants

Functionality is probably their key selling point: If done correctly, a dental implant will work like your old tooth did. As an added bonus, they also prevent the common problem of post-tooth loss atrophy, something which dentures cannot combat: Atrophy, the slow decay of bone surrounding the missing tooth, can lead to a gradual change in face and jaw shape. Dental implants, however, not only help prevent atrophy, but can even stimulate bone growth! No surrounding, healthy tissue need be affected either: Dental bridges, another alternative to dentures, can sometimes require neighbouring teeth to be removed so as to accommodate the false tooth. With dental implants, there is no such problem.

The procedure

First off, your teeth and gums will be checked to ensure you can support the implant. It should be recognised that implants need a reasonable amount of quality bone tissue to be available from the patient; for most folks, this shouldn’t be an issue. The gum is cut, raised and then a small hole, where the implant is to be placed, is drilled into a specific jaw location. Your implant is then fitted into this socket and the gum is stitched back up. The implant is then left to heal, for between six weeks and six months. After this period, a temporary crown will be fitted for between four and six weeks. Following this, the final restoration will be attached.

Looking After Children’s Teeth In Central Liverpool

January 9th, 2014

Given that parents will have, at some point, spent roughly a 9-month period fussing over something seemingly invisible, it shouldn’t be too hard to take in that cavities can occur in the teeth of a child prior to erupting. Sadly, the lack of visible effects produced by these internal cavities means that the importance of dental care so early in a child’s life can, in itself, seem somewhat invisible. Fear not, however, gentle reader, as here will we guide you through all the ins and outs of caring for your child’s dental health.

Those very early check ups

At Liverpool Dental Spa, we provide dental checkups prior to your child’s teeth emerging so as to prevent those early cavities from emerging. Aside from this, regularly having your child’s teeth examined by a dentist is imperative: you should be aiming for a check-up every 6 months. The reason for this is that there are several early signs of dental problems, which may go unnoticed by a layman.

A good brushing routine

In between those aforementioned checkups, however, you are essentially your child’s first line of defence against tooth decay and, through establishing a regular oral health routine, will be setting your child up for a life of rich dental health. In the very early stages, however, you will be cleaning your children’s teeth for them. Prior to their erupting, you can clean a baby’s teeth with a wet cloth and a smidgen of toothpaste. After they have erupted, you can purchase specialised brushes. Remember, once they are doing it themselves, to get your kids to brush twice a day for two whole minutes.

Minimising future problems

Many dental difficulties, which could develop in later life, can be spotted during early checkups, making them useful for preventing lengthy treatment during a child’s teens. In terms of general protection, we at Liverpool Dental Spa can also apply fluoride applications and fissure sealants which will help protect your child’s teeth during those early, sugar hungry, years.

The importance of education

Alongside teaching you and your child techniques for protecting your teeth, we also hope to teach another lesson: The dentist is nothing to fear. Dental phobia is a major obstacle to good oral hygiene and helping to establish a good relationship between your child and dentistry as a profession will help to prevent this.

Introducing The MTM No Trace Braces In Central Liverpool

January 7th, 2014

Perfect rhymes, like ‘trace’ and ‘brace’, are hard not to notice. The name of the ‘MTM No Trace’ cleverly suggests, through rhymed association, that it is a brace system, but also, through the absence of the actual word ‘brace’, points to its most striking feature: It is practically invisible, seemingly absent.

What is the MTM No Trace?

It is an invisible, fixed brace system for patients suffering from minor orthodontic issues. They operate like conventional fixed braces, except, unlike their traditional counterparts, MTM No Trace braces are fitted on the inside of the mouth, meaning they cannot be seen.

The benefits of the No Trace brace

The most obvious benefit of the brace is cosmetic: By being attached to the back of your teeth, the No Trace brace avoids all the unfortunate associations, which a fixed brace conjures. By being fixed, however, it also avoids a common problem associated with removable, invisible aligners: They eliminate human error. Aligners can be removed for cleaning or for brief social occasions, but forgetting to put them back in can lead to dire consequences: Forgetting to put an aligner back in place can delay treatment drastically and lead to increased costs. Thankfully, as MTM No Trace braces are fixed, you need not worry about such things. To top it all off, you won’t even be not-worrying for very long: This brace system is speedy and can produce a wonderfully straight smile in between twelve and twenty four weeks.

Is this treatment suitable for all?

The MTM No Trace brace system is specifically designed for patients requiring minor orthodontic corrections and best suited to performing small movements in teeth. As a result of this, it is not appropriate for those requiring more complex or extensive dental work. Fear not, however, as, if this treatment is not best suited for your needs, we at Liverpool Dental Spa can easily recommend alternative treatments. For those only requiring minor corrections, however, the MTM No Trace brace should work a treat.

Find Out How The Inman Aligner Could Benefit You In The Heart Of Liverpool

January 3rd, 2014

Orthodontic treatment can take a long time to complete, some treatments taking up to three years to finish, and, in the relief of achieving one’s goal, one can neglect to wear their retainer. This is understandable, a retainer can feel like a kind of dental halfway house, but it can lead one right back to where they started: Refusing, or forgetting, to wear a retainer can lead to a dental relapse. Thankfully, for those of us in such a scenario, there is the Inman Aligner…

What is the Inman Aligner?

The Inman Aligner is a removable brace-like device, which aligns teeth, but mostly focuses on one’s front teeth.

What are the benefits of this Inman Aligner?

It is fast; faster than superman speeding on a movie being streamed on a super-fast broadband connection in the fast lane.  Conventional brace treatment can take up to three years to complete. With the Inman Aligner, a dental relapse can be corrected in between six and eighteen weeks, a mere fragment of the time which starting from scratch would take. Alongside these time saving advantages, the Inman Aligner also has the advantages of any removable brace: They can be removed for eating, thus stopping the aligner from being damaged by hard foods, and can be taken out to be cleaned, helping to prevent the obstructions which can cause plaque to build up in conventional braces.

Will this aligner work for everybody?

Sadly not: It is best suited for treating minor misalignments and relapses. If the treatment is appropriate for you will be determined during an initial meeting. Don’t worry if you are not! Our dental team will easily be able to recommend alternative treatments.

How does it do this?

The Aligner utilises dual nickel titanium coil springs to fuel two aligner bows. The bows lightly oppose each other and thus move your teeth in to position. The speedy results stem from the fact that the mild force produced by the aligner operates over a very large range of movement.

Treating Jaw Joint Pain In The Heart Of Liverpool

January 1st, 2014

Use degrades: If something is in continual operation, it will wear down. At a dentist’s practice, you will often hear about how this issue affects teeth, but, likewise, your jaw can also suffer the pains of continual repetition. Thankfully, at Liverpool Dental Spa, we are equipped both to deal with, and help indentify, jaw joint problems.

Key indicators of jaw joint issues

Does your jaw often click? Does it regularly ache? Well, these are the bluntest indicators of jaw problems. Sometimes, however, jaw problems can occur as the result of a bacterial infection, often as the result of poor dental hygiene. TMD, or ‘Temporomandibular disorder’ if you want to sound smart, is a chronic jaw problem and it is estimated that 20% of the population are affected by it, yet it only 10% or 20% of those affected with the problem will go and seek help! Many other major problems often include jaw pain as a symptom, so being checked out is incredibly important as it might indicate something beyond discomfort! Jaw pain, if not dealt with, can lead to more serious jaw problems as well.

Treatments

There are a variety of treatments available to combat jaw pain. Thankfully, most of these are non-surgical and surgical treatment is, in itself, only recommended in extreme cases. Some basic treatments include performing small, regular jaw exercise or altering your diet: avoiding harsh, crunchy foods and cutting your foods in to more manageable chunks can help prevent jaw pain. Slight changes in general posture and habit can also make a difference: Avoiding extreme jaw movements and trying not rest your jaw in your hand can help. If physical therapy and dietary changes don’t produce the desired results, medication can also be used to relieve swelling and muscle pain. If needed, surgical options are also available.

Don’t suffer in silence! If jaw pain is causing you distress, then contact us at Liverpool Dental Spa and see how we can help.
