Terrific Technology with CEREC Restorations

December 4th, 2015

At Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa, we’re big fans of technology and are always eager to invest in new innovations to bring our clients the best treatments on the market. CEREC is a terrific form of technology that enables us to offer same-day bespoke restorative treatment. Whether you need repairs in a hurry or want to enjoy the many benefits of treatment straightaway, CEREC could be an ideal option for you.

What is CEREC and what’s so good about it?

CEREC is a form of technology that allows us to complete the process of restoring the teeth in a single day. With CEREC, we can design, fabricate and fit a brand new crown, veneers, onlay or inlay in just one session, so there’s no hanging about, no temporary restorations and no need to book time off work.

CEREC treatment works by taking images of the teeth and using advanced software to convert them into templates for the new restoration. These virtual templates are sent to the on-site milling machine and the fabrication process begins. In just a couple of minutes, the milling machine creates a brand new, bespoke restoration. Once this process is complete, your dentist can then fit the restoration and you can see the results for yourself.

Traditionally, restorative treatment involves creating putty impressions, which are sent away to a laboratory where the restoration is made by a dental technician. This process usually takes around 2 weeks. With CEREC, we can do everything on-site and this saves a great deal of time as your new restoration will be ready on the same day. There’s also no need to fit a temporary restoration. In addition to time saving, dentists can also enjoy greater involvement in the design process and can guide you through the process step by step so you always know what’s going on.

If you’re interested in CEREC treatment and would like to find out more, simply give us a call and arrange a consultation.

Crown Yourself This Christmas with a Remarkable Restoration

December 2nd, 2015

If you’re looking forward to celebrating like a VIP this Christmas, why not treat your troublesome tooth to a brand new crown? With same-day CEREC treatment and hand-crafted porcelain crowns on offer, we can ensure you have a smile fit for royalty this festive season.

What are crowns and why would I need one?

Crowns are a type of restoration most commonly employed when a tooth is broken, fractured or decayed. A crown is also known as a cap, as it sits over the top of the tooth. Crowns can be made from various materials and porcelain crowns are very popular as they restore the teeth without taking away from the beautiful aesthetic of your smile.

Crowns can also be used with dental implants to replace a missing tooth and they are often fitted following root canal treatment, when a tooth is decayed and harmful bacteria have reached the living tissue of the tooth, known as the pulp.

The main purpose of the crown is to strengthen and restore the tooth, but in many cases fitting a new crown can also have amazing aesthetic benefits.

Crowns are not a permanent solution, but they should last for many years. When you come for your routine dental checks, your dentist will have a look at any crowns you have to see how you are getting on.

Crown treatment at Liverpool Implant and Aesthetic Dental Spa

We are very proud to invest in the latest dental treatments and technology and are delighted to offer CEREC and traditional hand-crafted porcelain crowns. We use only the finest quality materials and our dentists have extensive experience, so you can rest assured that you’re in good hands.

With CEREC, we are able to offer same-day restorative treatment, so you can enjoy the benefits of a brand new bespoke crown without delay. Ask our dentists for more information!

Awesome Orthodontic Solutions

November 30th, 2015

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that fixes a variety of dental problems, including overcrowding, crookedness, overbites and underbites, misalignment and irregular jaw alignment. There are many advanced and effective solutions available from your Liverpool dentist.

Aligner evolution

The treatment options for adults have expanded enormously over the years, taking into account important factors such as discretion, which is vital both for maintaining confidence and having the least impact on everyday interactions, and time taken out of a busy lifestyle.

To this end there are multiple alternatives to regular metal wire braces, and these are discussed on their own pages in this section. Invisalign boasts perhaps the fullest discretion with its near ‘invisible’ aligners that blend into the teeth, while products such as Six Month Smiles offer an unprecedented shortness of treatment.

Benefits of orthodontic treatment

There are a number of long term health benefits of having treatment to correct orthodontic problems. Especially important are the reduced risk of tooth or gum decay, which can prevent further expensive treatment or tooth loss in future, and the fact that aligned and healthy teeth are easier cleaned and flossed than teeth left crooked or irregular.

Bad bites can affect your nutrition and cause premature wearing of the back teeth, while a misaligned jaw may interfere with your speech. Misalignment and malocclusion also affect the look and lower the self-esteem of many adults, who feel renewed and more confident after treatment.

The Many Benefits of White Fillings

November 27th, 2015

Some things are best when they aren’t noticed and contribute to the whole without taking the spotlight. This can be quite literally true of lighting, of percussion in a music track or of make up: They contribute to an effect, one which their being recognised might shatter. White fillings follow this logic. Amalgam fillings, alas, do not. Both types of filling do prevent plaque from attacking the pulp housed in the tooth, but only one makes it look like you haven’t got a filling at all.

The trouble with those amalgam fillings

Sadly, metal amalgam fillings don’t just stand out from their pearly white brethren, they may also be marginally toxic. The amalgam used in producing these fillings contains mercury, a very toxic substance, and scientists do concur that the presence of mercury in such fillings may leak mercury into one’s mouth. Typically, the exact effect of mercury on the mouth is up for debate: Some scientists claim the small amount of mercury is enough to pose a health risk, other scientists do not.  If you’d prefer to bypass said debate entirely, you could, however, just opt for the white resin fillings…

A little too conspicuous

The dark tone of amalgam fillings is but a few shades removed from the very effects of decay they respond to. Yes, they protect your teeth from further damage, but they also serve as a souvenir of said erosion.  With white fillings, you’ll probably forget you ever had work done in the first place.

The importance of fillings

The erosion of your tooth enamel results from plaque acids and bacteria attacking your teeth. If the bacteria manages to make it to your inner tooth pulp, your tooth can become infected and may need to be removed. Brushing and flossing regularly is the best way to prevent this, but it is imperative that, if your enamel is bypassed, you get a filling. A filling will provide ample protection and will prevent you requiring further costly treatments (such as a root canal) or losing the tooth entirely.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Sleep Apnoea

November 26th, 2015

Get advice about sleep apnoea from Liverpool dentists

Sleep apnoea causes the muscles in your throat to relax during sleep, thus blocking the airways. It is most common in those who are over forty years of age.

When the airways are blocked, oxygen cannot reach the brain and a signal is sent to your body to wake up.  As a result, those with sleep apnoea have frequently disrupted sleep.  As anyone who has had problems sleeping will know, this can make life difficult in several ways.  Those with sleep apnoea find that they are more likely to be involved in traffic accidents as they will frequently be tired in the day and have compromised reaction times.  Even worse than this, studies have linked the hypertension that can be brought on by sleep apnoea is linked with an increased tendency towards strokes and heart attacks.

If you are overweight or smoke your risk of developing sleep apnoea increases and a tendency to drink alcohol before sleep can also bring about the condition.  The use of sleeping pills and sedatives has also been linked with sleep apnoea and some studies demonstrate that the disorder has a tendency to run in families, meaning you are more likely to suffer from sleep apnoea if a relative has it.

Your Liverpool dentist has access to the parts of your mouth involved with sleep apnoea and so they are in an excellent position to diagnose the condition during one of your six month check ups.  If it is found that you have sleep apnoea you might be given one of two types of device to alleviate the condition.

The Importance of Oral Cancer Screening

November 24th, 2015

More than 6,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with oral cancer every year and the numbers are growing year on year.

One of the major issues with oral cancer is that many people are unaware of the symptoms and this means that the majority of cases are not diagnosed at an early stage. This is why oral cancer screening and regular dental checks are so important.

What happens during screening?

Oral cancer screening is fast and painless – we will simply use a high-tech instrument to examine your mouth and check for signs of abnormal tissue or changes in your mouth. This technology allows us to see changes not visible to the naked eye. The test only lasts a couple of minutes and we will also have a little chat with you about the causes and symptoms of oral cancer so you can keep an eye out for possible warning signs.

About oral cancer

Oral cancer affects the soft tissues in the mouth and the most common symptoms include mouth ulcers or sores that take longer than 2-3 weeks to heal, red or white patches in the mouth and abnormal lumps in the mouth or throat. Additional symptoms may include a persistent sore throat and hoarseness.

The main risk factors for oral cancer include smoking, drinking alcohol, a poor diet lacking in nutrients and HPV infection. HPV (human papilloma virus) is spread through sexual contact and it is also a risk factor for cervical cancer.

If you would like to find out more about oral cancer or arrange a screening check, call the practice today in the heart of Liverpool.

The Advantages of White Fillings

November 20th, 2015

A filling is a restorative material that a dentist uses to return function to a decayed or otherwise broken tooth. These fillings come in all different types and colours, from flashy gold fillings to the more traditionally used amalgam fillings (containing silver, zinc, mercury  and copper). Despite having a long life advantage (up to 7 years), these have the great disadvantage of being noticeable.  This is where composite fillings have their advantages.

What are composite fillings?

A composite filling isn’t made up from an amalgam of metals and is rather made up from a mixture of both plastic and glass. They are known as ‘white fillings’ because they are tooth-coloured and blend into your smile perfectly in stark contrast to the fillings we mentioned earlier.

The advantages of white fillings

The main advantage to having white fillings is their chameleon-like ability to camouflage themselves in with the rest of the tooth and remain very much unnoticeable. This is because the dentist can blend shades until the composite resin is nearly identical.

With white fillings only a fraction of the healthy tooth has to be removed before applying the composite, whereas in applying other fillings, a large chunk of healthy tooth often has to be removed for the filling to fit.  Also the bonding can be done so effectively that your teeth are often stronger than they ever were before. You can also use the tooth immediately after the composite has been set, allowing your teeth to function as soon as the procedure has been completed.

Stop Plaque-Build Up with a Regular Oral Hygiene Routine

November 18th, 2015

Maintaining good overall hygiene means keeping your mouth  healthy. You will need to take care that teeth are kept clean and that bits of food do not collect in them, that you do not regularly have bad breath, and that your gums are not bleeding as you floss or brush.

Good oral hygiene

If you do suffer from any of these things, there could be a dental problem that requires treatment. You should visit your dentist as soon as possible so that any issues can be identified. The dentist can also advise you on any techniques that will be useful in keeping good oral hygiene, as well as identifying any particular parts of the mouth that you need to focus on.

Preventing the build-up of plaque by looking after your teeth and gums is vital for your well-being and having healthy teeth enables you to speak and eat well as well as helping you feel and look good.

Flossing and brushing

The best way to stop dental problems resulting from plaque is to take daily measures to stop it forming. Flossing and brushing on a daily basis will prevent you needing treatments for serious conditions that have developed.

As well as regular check-ups with your dentist, the simple measures you can take to prevent the development of problems such as gum disease and tooth decay include the following:

  • Brushing teeth properly twice every day and flossing on a daily basis
  • Avoid snacking between meals and try to ensure your diet is balanced
  • Use toothpaste and other dental products containing fluoride
  • If it is approved by your dentist, use a fluoride mouthwash to rinse your mouth

The Importance of Regular Hygiene Check-Ups

November 16th, 2015

Dental hygienists are experts in oral hygiene and provide treatments designed to prevent or treat oral diseases. You may be advised to see a dental hygienist if you have gum disease, a high risk of developing gum disease, suffer from halitosis (bad breath) or are prone to plaque and tartar build-up. You can also arrange to see a dental hygienist if you want to experience an intensive cleaning treatment to make your teeth shiny and smooth.

Why is it important to see a dental hygienist?

Dental hygiene sessions can make a real difference to your oral health, especially if you are at risk of developing oral diseases such as gum disease. Cleaning treatments help to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from your mouth as well as giving your mouth a fresh and clean feel.

Our hygienists also offer preventative treatments and advice about oral hygiene at home, healthy eating and diet and giving up smoking. Our aim is to promote good oral health and help you to enjoy a healthy, bright smile.

Our hygiene treatments

We offer a range of oral hygiene and preventative dental treatments, including scale and polish, tartar removal, fluoride varnish and sealant treatment.

Oral hygiene and gum disease

If you have gum disease, it is likely that you will be advised to see a dental hygienist. Our dentists and hygienists work together to manage and treat gum disease as effectively as possible. Regular hygiene sessions are an important way of tackling and removing plaque and preventing gum disease from getting worse.

The Benefits of Interdental Brushing

November 6th, 2015

An interdental brush is a type of flossing tool used to brush away food debris and plaque from between the teeth. For optimal oral hygiene, the interdental brush should be used at least three times a week and is easily included as part of daily oral hygiene practice.

We recommend interdental brushing

The interdental brush benefits patients at Liverpool Dental Spa in a number of ways:

Adjustable interdental brush heads

Our dental structures vary and the interdental brush is made to suit different sized and spaced teeth with adjustable brush heads. The flossing brushes come in thin to thicker sizes, some smaller and some larger. The brush heads are attached to a handle and may be removed and replaced as needed.

Versatile interdental brushing

Interdental brushes are versatile in that different brush heads can be used to clean away debris from between existing teeth and dental restorations. such as crowns and bridges.

It is recommended to have a selection of brush heads to clean between teeth, tooth gaps and dental restorations. Discuss interdental brushing with your dentist if you have dental implants or wear an orthodontic device for teeth straightening.

Thorough oral hygiene

Toothbrushes and standard floss does not always get between all of the tooth grooves. Plaque and tartar may therefore develop in hard to reach places. Interdental brushes are shaped to reach into tooth grooves to remove plaque and debris, preventing bacterial colonisation and tooth decay.

The brush heads are designed to clean teeth with ease, moving in between and gently moving out of tooth gaps and grooves for proper cleansing.
