What to Do if You Break a Tooth

April 19th, 2017

If you break a tooth, don’t panic! There may be a very simple solution. If you have a fractured tooth, you may need a new crown or a filling, but often, we can repair minor damage with dental bonding.

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic treatment, which also has restorative benefits. It can be used to improve the aesthetic of misshapen and worn teeth and to repair chipped teeth. You may also come across the terms cosmetic, aesthetic or composite bonding when dentists are talking about dental bonding.

To carry out the procedure, your dentist will use a material called dental composite to patch up chips and jagged edges. Composite has a similar consistency to putty at room temperature, and it comes in a range of tooth-coloured shades. Your dentist will choose the shade that is closest to your natural teeth to make sure that it’s impossible to tell the difference between your tooth and the composite.

Your dentist will clean the tooth and then start the bonding process. They will use a small amount of material to carry out the necessary repairs, layering the composite if required. As the composite is soft at this stage, it can be shaped, and this is why this treatment is so versatile. As well as repairing chips, bonding can also be used to fill in gaps between the teeth and alter the shape of the teeth slightly. When the composite is in the desired place, it will be set firm using a curing light. Although composite isn’t quite as strong as natural tooth enamel, it is very robust and durable.

The advantages of dental bonding

Dental bonding is a rapid, painless and affordable solution for chipped teeth. In less than an hour, we can restore your smile and make you feel more confident, and you don’t need to worry about injections or pain.

How We Can Help You Stop Snoring

April 12th, 2017

Are you kept awake at night by your partner snoring? Do you struggle to remember the last time you had an unbroken night’s sleep? Or are you the snorer desperate to find a solution so that peace and harmony can be restored to the household? If snoring is a problem, we can help.

Why do people snore?

When you snore, the noise that other people hear is made by the soft tissue at the back of the throat vibrating. In many cases, people snore on a temporary basis, and this is often linked to your sleeping position, illnesses like coughs and colds, and allergies. It’s also very common to snore after drinking, as alcohol causes the muscles in the throat to relax. In the long-term, persistent snoring may be linked to being overweight or smoking. Snoring is not the same as sleep apnoea, but people who have sleep apnoea often snore as a result of breathing difficulties.

Solving the snoring problem

Snoring may not affect you, as you may be completely unaware that you do it. But it’s likely to take its toll on anyone you share your room with. If you snore, it can wake your partner up or make it difficult for them to drift off to sleep. Sleepless nights cause irritability, and you may find yourself arguing more than often. We recommend using a specially made bite guard to solve the snoring problem. Bite guards help to adjust the position of the jaw slightly, which opens up the airway when you sleep. This increases oxygen flow, and should stop you from snoring.

If you’d like to find out more about snoring remedies, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We could have you sleeping soundly in no time at all.

How Liverpool Dental Spa Can Sculpt the Shape of your Smile

April 10th, 2017

It’s very rare to have a naturally perfect smile. If you don’t like the shape of your teeth and gums, you don’t have to resign yourself to a lifetime of hiding your smile away. With innovative techniques like tooth reshaping and gum contouring, we can sculpt your teeth and gums and ensure you look and feel a million dollars every time you smile.

Tooth reshaping

Do you have a tooth that is longer than the others? Or do you feel like your smile looks unbalanced or uneven? If so, we can use tooth reshaping techniques to improve the shape of the individual teeth and adjust the size to create a beautiful, balanced smile. The procedure doesn’t take long, there’s minimal pain involved, and we have an experienced team on hand, so you can rest assured that you’re in the best hands.

Gum contouring

Do you have a gummy smile? Do you look in the mirror and think that your teeth look small and short? A gummy smile is not a medical problem. It doesn’t cause any physical pain and it won’t put your oral or general health at risk. However, it can affect your confidence and the way you feel when you smile. With a gummy smile, the gum tissue covers more of the tooth surface than normal, and this means that more gum tissue and less tooth tissue are visible when you smile. A gummy smile tends to make the teeth look short, and it affects the overall aesthetic of the smile.

Gum contouring is a technique we use to improve the look of the smile. It involves rimming away very tiny pieces of the gum tissue and reshaping the gums to unveil more of the tooth structure, making the teeth look longer and larger and giving you a beautiful new smile. The procedure is quick and we use the latest technology to minimise discomfort.

If you’re interested in our contouring or reshaping techniques, don’t hesitate to give us a call and find out more today!

Four Ways to Protect Your New Crowns

April 7th, 2017

When you have a tooth crowned, you want it to stand the test of time. If you have a new crown, here are four ways to protect your tooth:

  1. Maintain good oral hygiene: the best way to protect your teeth from harm is to maintain good oral hygiene at home. Although a crown cannot become decayed, the area where the restoration joins the natural tooth tissue can, so it’s essential to brush twice-daily and floss.
  2. Wear a mouth guard: if you’re playing sport, and there’s a risk of dental injury, always wear a mouth guard. Even if you’re just messing around or training, it’s essential to protect your teeth and gums. If you don’t already have a mouth guard, we strongly recommend investing in a dentist-made gum shield. These guards offer a perfect fit, and they’re very good quality. We recommend using a mouth guard for rugby, hockey, boxing, martial arts, kickboxing and lacrosse.
  3. Avoid hard foods: eating certain foods can damage your teeth, and your new crown will not be invincible. Avoid hard foods like boiled sweets and popcorn and don’t crush ice between your teeth. We also advise against using your teeth to bite labels off clothing or take tops off glass bottles.
  4. Check in with your dentist: we cannot stress the importance of seeing a dentist on a regular basis enough. If you keep up to date with check-ups, you have a much lower risk of dental disease. Every time you have a routine check, your dentist will have a good look at any fillings or crowns you have and make sure they’re in tip-top condition.

If you need any more advice about caring for crowns, our dental team will be happy to help.

How Invisalign Straightens Teeth Subtly

April 5th, 2017

Many people suffer from tooth misalignment, but they’re reluctant to seek help because they don’t want to wear unsightly braces. Today, you can achieve a gorgeous, straight smile without worrying about your image thanks to subtle systems like Invisalign. If you’ve always wanted straight teeth, but you’ve been putting off seeing your dentist because you don’t like the sound of braces, now is the time to reconsider. With Invisalign, we can straighten your teeth and give you a beautiful new smile without anyone even knowing that you’ve had treatment.

What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign is a clear brace system, which uses a series of bespoke removable braces called aligners to move the teeth. Treatment is planned in advance using innovative software, which predicts the movement of the teeth, and the aligners are drawn up according to your individual treatment plan. You wear each aligner for 2 weeks, and then swap it for the next one in the sequence.

Invisalign aligners are removable, and they are designed to be taken out when you eat, drink and clean your teeth. Although it’s very easy to take your aligners out, we recommend wearing the braces for around 22 hours per day to achieve the best results.

What’s so good about Invisalign?

Many people are anxious about having braces because they assume that they’ll be painful and they worry about what other people will think. With Invisalign, you don’t have to have any concerns because the braces are virtually invisible, and they’re also very comfortable. You can take them out to eat and brush your teeth so you don’t need to make any changes to your diet or your oral hygiene regime, and there are no painful metal parts or appointments required to tighten the braces.

At Home or In Chair: Which Whitening Solution is Right for You?

April 3rd, 2017

At Liverpool Dental Spa, tooth whitening is one of our most popular cosmetic services. If you long for a dazzling white smile for summer, we have some incredible options for you. We offer both at-home and in-chair treatments, so which is the best solution for you?

At home treatment

At-home treatment is a great option for those with hectic schedules, as it’s really convenient, and you can fit it in around other commitments. With home treatment, you can usually expect results within 10-14 days. This option is generally less expensive than in-chair treatments and the process is very simple. All you have to do is wear whitening trays for a set period of time each day.

In-chair treatment

In-chair whitening treatments can often produce more dramatic results in a shorter space of time than at-home therapies. Zoom! whitening, for example, takes just an hour to lighten the teeth by several shades. Our other option, Enlighten, is a system that combines elements of home and in-chair treatment to bring you the best of both worlds. For 14 days, you’ll wear Enlighten whitening trays, which are similar to mouth guards, at home, and this will be followed by an hour-long power whitening session at the clinic. Enlighten is capable of achieving the lightest tooth shade, B1, and the results should last for many years. In-chair treatment is generally recommended for those who are looking for a swift solution and more drastic results.

If you’re considering having tooth whitening treatment, we recommend making an appointment, so that we can talk you through the different options, help you weigh up the pros and cons and enable you to make a well-informed decision. Our friendly dentists are here to answer any questions you may have, and explain exactly what each process involves and what kinds of results you can expect.

If you’re searching for a treatment that can give you a perfect, straight smile without any hassle at all, look no further than Perfect Clear. This clear brace system uses bespoke K positioners to correct misalignment with maximum discretion.

About Perfect Clear

You can eat and brush your teeth as normal, and you don’t have to feel anxious about getting food stuck in your brace.

The Benefits of Perfect Clear

Top Five Ways to Teach Your Children to Keep Their Teeth Healthy

March 28th, 2017

Every year in the UK, hundreds of children have treatment in hospital for dental issues. At Liverpool Dental Spa, we’re passionate about prevention, and we’re eager to encourage good habits from an early age. If you’re a parent, here are 5 ways to teach your children to keep their teeth healthy:

  1. Supervise brushing: when you have young children, they may need help with brushing, and when you have older children, they may need that extra incentive to do a good job. Kids tend to whizz a brush around their mouth, and this constitutes brushing their teeth. By supervising them, you can make sure they’re doing a thorough job each time.
  2. Play a song: many of us don’t brush for long enough, and this can damage our teeth and gums. Try and make teeth cleaning fun and encourage your children to brush for longer by putting a song on, and challenging the children to brush from start to finish.
  3. Arrange regular check-ups: it’s really important for children to see the dentist. If they’re used to having check-ups, they’re much less likely to feel anxious when they get older.
  4. Make it fun: many children moan about having to brush their teeth, so try and make it a more appealing use of their time. Make up some games, set challenges, and brush together as a family. You can also get some great child-friendly toothbrushes and toothpastes, which may help them to get a little more excited about cleaning their teeth.
  5. Healthy eating: one of the biggest problems facing dentists at the moment is a sugar-heavy diet. Dentists see children all the time who have lots of cavities as a result of their diet. Sugary foods should be given only as treats, rather than as part of the daily diet. Try and reduce your sugar intake as a family by swapping sugary cereals for porridge or whole grain cereals, replacing fizzy drinks with water or sugar-free cordial and avoiding foods like crisps, popcorn, sweets and biscuits, especially between meals.

Does Vaping Hurt Your Teeth As Much as Regular Cigarettes

March 27th, 2017

Vaping is a hot topic in the world of health news. Using e-cigarettes is a relatively new thing, and this means that it’s almost impossible to determine the effects of vaping instead of smoking. When you use an e-cigarette, you’re not exposing your body to as many harmful substances as you do when you smoke, and this is hugely beneficial, but this doesn’t mean that vaping is safe.

What are the Effects of Vaping on the Teeth?

When you smoke, you put yourself at risk of oral cancer, gum disease and halitosis. There’s also a high risk of tooth staining. The early signs suggest that vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking when it comes to your dental health; however, vaping is not without risk. When you use an e-cigarette, you’re still taking in nicotine, and this can be incredibly damaging to your mouth. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, which means that it causes the blood vessels to constrict. When you consume nicotine, blood flow to the gums decreases, and this means that you’re at risk of gum disease.

Vaping may not expose you to as many carcinogenic substances as smoking, but it still poses risks. It can often be a successful tool for those who want to quit smoking, as you can reduce nicotine gradually. As your body adapts to lower quantities, you can cut down without having to battle cravings, and this can increase your chances of giving up for good.

If you do want to give up smoking, we are here to offer advice and support. Our dental team has extensive experience, and we’re here to cheer you on and reassure you every step of the way.

Five Foods That You Don’t Realise Damage Your Teeth

March 24th, 2017

We all know that cakes, biscuits and sweets are bad for our teeth, but what about those so-called healthy alternatives? Here are five foods that you may not realise will damage your teeth:

  1. Popcorn: popcorn is an incredibly popular snack at the moment, and there are many different brands and flavours to choose from. Often marketed as a healthy lower-calorie alternative to crisps, popcorn may contain less fat and sugar, but it’s still bad for your teeth. Popcorn gets stuck in your teeth, which increases the risk of plaque formation and the kernels can also cause damage to your teeth. They’re very hard, and if you accidentally bite down on one, you could break or chip a tooth.
  2. Fruit juice: if you’re drinking fruit juice, you may think that you’re making a really healthy choice. In some cases, juices can be really good for you, as they’re packed with vitamins. However, if you buy juices from a café or supermarket, they often contain a lot of added sugar. They’re also very acidic, which puts your enamel at risk. If you are buying juice, check the sugar content, and dilute each serving.
  3. Salad dressing: salad is one of the champions of the healthy eating world, but once you start adding things to it, it can soon become less healthy. Salad dressings may contain sugar and salt, and some can also have high fat content; however, the main problem for your teeth is the acidity. Acids erode the enamel, which increases your risk of decay and sensitivity.
  4. Smoothies: fruit smoothies are supposed to be brilliant for you, but this may not always be the case. Like juices, if you buy ready-made smoothies, they’re often laden with sugar. If you love smoothies, try making them at home instead.
  5. Dried fruit: dried fruit is often thought of a healthy snack option, but it can be misleading. Fruits contain natural sugars, but often, more sugar is added to bags of dried fruit. Eating whole, natural pieces of fruit is usually much better for you.

If you have any questions about tooth-friendly foods, or you’re worried that your diet may be letting your dental health down, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Our dentists will be happy to answer questions, and give you some healthy eating tips.
