Who Said Fillings Need to be Ugly?

Thursday, March 12th, 2015

If you thought a filling would spell the end of your beautiful smile, think again! With our white fillings, we can restore your tooth, while also preserving its natural beauty.

What is a white filling?

White fillings are an increasingly popular alternative to fillings made from mercury amalgam. They are used to fill  holes that develop in the surface of the tooth as a result of decay, known as cavities. White fillings are made from resins and dental composite and they are shade matched to the natural tooth colour to ensure that they are indistinguishable from the rest of the tooth.

Fillings are an effective means of strengthening a decayed tooth and the procedure also helps to lower the risk of decay reaching other areas.

The filling procedure

The filling procedure is relatively simple and the tooth is numbed before treatment begins, so you don’t need to worry about feeling any pain. Before the cavity is filled, the decayed tissue is removed and the cavity is cleaned thoroughly. Once the cavity is clear, bonding agent is placed inside the hole and the composite is then poured inside. At this stage, the composite is soft and putty-like and it can be moulded to fit the shape of the cavity. Once the filling is in place, the composite is set hard using a curing light. This simply involves shining a light onto the tooth. Setting the composite takes just a few seconds and there’s no pain involved. All you have to do is pop on some goggles and relax. Once the filling has set, your dentist will then trim the edges to make sure of a perfect fit.

After you have a filling, your mouth will feel numb for a short period of time, but this will soon wear off. You can use your tooth as normal straightaway, but it may be best to avoid hot drinks until the numbness has subsided to prevent scalding your mouth.

Welcome to the World of White Fillings!

Friday, February 20th, 2015

We are excited to introduce our patients in Liverpool and beyond to wonderful white fillings. These natural looking fillings will strengthen and protect your teeth without affecting the look of your smile at all.

About white fillings

White fillings are designed to protect and strengthen teeth when there is a cavity in the tooth surface. Fillings seal the hole and help to reduce the risk of infection spreading to others parts of the tooth. White fillings are made from dental composite and resins. They are matched to the shade of your teeth to ensure that they cannot be distinguished from the natural tooth.

In the past, metal amalgams were used to fill teeth. However, nowadays white fillings are much more popular, as they are more aesthetically pleasing and safer. Many people have concerns about the potential toxicity of mercury and we are proud to promote amalgam-free dentistry.

We are able to fit new fillings and also replace old metal fillings with white fillings.

Does having a filling hurt?

The procedure to place a white filling is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you don’t need to worry about experiencing pain. After treatment, your tooth will feel numb for a short while, but you shouldn’t feel any discomfort.

Does a filling last forever?

Fillings should last for a couple of years, but they don’t last forever. Once your filling starts to wear, we will discuss replacing it with you and arrange an appointment at a time that is convenient to you.

If you’d like to book in for a filling or you would like to find out more about white filings at Liverpool Dental Spa, simply call us, fill in an online form or pop in and visit us if you’re in Liverpool.

Snow-White Fillings in Time for Christmas in the Heart of Liverpool

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

Christmas is a time for beaming from ear to ear and soaking up the festive spirit. If you’re dreaming of a snow-white smile this Christmas, now is the perfect time to book in for natural looking, discreet fillings. Whether you need a new filling or you’d like to replace an old metal filling, we can help.

About white fillings

White fillings are commonly used to treat decay. They fill cavities, which are small holes in the tooth enamel, the protective outer layer of the tooth. White fillings are made from dental composite and they are designed to match the shade of the tooth very closely. This enables you to have the restorative treatment you need without any negative impact on the look of your smile.

Dental composite is a putty-like material, and can also be used to repair chips and improve the aesthetic of misshapen teeth. When in its soft form, it can be shaped to fit the cavity. After this stage of treatment is complete, your dentist will set the filling using a curing light. Once the composite is firm, the tooth will be stronger and the filling should last for several years. We will check your filling every time you have a routine check-up.

Why are white fillings better than mercury amalgam fillings?

White fillings are very discreet and it’s very hard to detect them. In contrast, metal fillings are much more noticeable and they can detract from the beauty of the smile. Some people also have concerns about health and safety issues connected to mercury fillings and although they are approved for use in the UK, white fillings are considered a safer option. In the past, white fillings were not strong enough for some teeth, but advances in material design now mean that most teeth can be filled using dental composite.

Wonderful White Fillings in the Heart of Liverpool

Thursday, August 14th, 2014

Nothing makes you look and feel better than a bright white smile, and we are delighted to provide white fillings to restore decayed teeth with minimal impact to your beautiful smile. Whether you would like to replace existing metal fillings, or you need a new filling, we can help!

About white fillings

White fillings are very popular now because they look much better than amalgam fillings, which can easily be seen when you smile or open your mouth. White fillings are created from dental composite, which contains resins, and is available in a range of white shades. We use the closest shade to your natural tooth colour to ensure that it is impossible to tell the difference between the filling and the rest of the tooth.

Fillings are commonly used to treat cavities (holes that form in the tooth surface). This helps to prevent the spread of infection through the tooth and also strengthens the tooth to protect it from injury in the future.

What are the benefits of white fillings over amalgam fillings?

White fillings have obvious aesthetic benefits, as they don’t affect the look of your smile, but they are also environmentally friendly and safe. Modern materials are more durable than ever and most teeth can now be filled with dental composite.

The procedure

The filling procedure is simple, quick and painless. Before the filling is placed, we will numb the tooth to prevent you from feeling pain and we will then clean the cavity and clear it of decayed tissue. Once bonding material has been placed in the cavity, we will then insert the composite and mould it (at this stage the composite is in putty form) to fill the cavity and then set it to harden it using a curing light. Once the filling is hard, any final adjustments will be made and then you’ll be free to go home.

The Advantages Of White Fillings In The City Of Liverpool

Saturday, June 21st, 2014

Until fairly recently, patients who had decayed teeth were provided with fillings made from silver amalgam. These fillings were made from a mixture of metals such as mercury. Now, many patients opt for white fillings, which are made from dental composite, glass ionmers and resins for a more natural look.

We place new white fillings to treat tooth decay, and we can also replace amalgam fillings with white fillings for those who would prefer a more aesthetically pleasing restoration.

What are the benefits of white fillings?

White fillings are designed to match your natural tooth shade and this means that they are invisible once they are in place. They don’t impair the look of your smile and they help to make your tooth stronger and resistant to infection in the future. White fillings are also safer and more environmentally friendly than amalgam fillings, as concerns have been raised about problems with toxicity associated with mercury. Silver fillings are highly visible when you open your mouth and although they are strong and durable, modern materials used for fillings are almost as hard-wearing and a white filling should last around 7-10 years.

What happens when you have a filling?

When you have a filling, the tooth is prepared and then filling material is placed inside the cavity. The preparation stage involves removing any decayed tissue from the cavity and then cleaning the tooth to get rid of any harmful bacteria.

Once the cavity is clean, bonding material is placed inside the hole to help the composite to adhere. The dental composite is then poured into the cavity and shaped. At this stage, it is like putty in texture and can be moulded to fit the cavity. The composite is then set firm using a powerful curing light and then any final trimming is carried out to ensure a comfortable fit.

What Are The Benefits Of White Fillings For Patients In Liverpool?

The problem with amalgam fillings

Metal amalgam fillings are not just highly noticeable; they can also be mildly toxic. The amalgam used contains mercury, a highly toxic material, and scientists agree that the presence of mercury in these fillings will leach mercury into the mouth. The precise impact of the mercury on the mouth, however, is debatable, with scientists coming to opposing conclusion as to whether the small amount of mercury used in these fillings presents a health risk. Regardless, you can bypass this entire debate by simply opting for a white resin filling!

Standing out from the crowd

The aesthetic problem with amalgam fillings is that they resemble the very decay which they are trying to cover up. They may prevent further plaque acids from entering the tooth, but they serve as a reminder that such erosion occurred in the first place. White fillings, however, blend in far more subtly whilst serving the same protective role.

The importance of fillings

Dental decay occurs as the result of plaque acids and bacteria eating away at your tooth enamel. The prevention of this, via regular brushing and flossing, is obviously the most effect tooth protection treatment. If, however, your enamel is breached, then urgently getting a filling is imperative as, once your tooth’s inner pulp is exposed and infected, it is effectively dying. Dental fillings are important as they prevent you from either losing your tooth entirely or resorting to root canal treatment.

Discreet Cavity Treatment With White Fillings In The City Of Liverpool

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Some of us have pleasant childhood memories of our first dental visits for teeth cleaning and fillings. Others have experiences filled with terror about drills and metal fillings, leading to dental phobia in adulthood.

Dentistry has immensely evolved in use of materials and equipment for filling cavities. New treatments have transformed oral health with patients benefiting from:

  • Choices in white composite or porcelain fillings for aesthetically-pleasing results
  • Replacement of mercury-containing amalgam fillings with porcelain ones for better health
  • Fissure-sealant and fluoride treatments to prevent tooth decay and gum disease
  • Advanced technologies for accurate fillings reducing risk of over-filling and dental damage
  • Oral cleansing, scaling and polishing by dentist and/or oral hygienist

Cavities are holes in teeth that occur due to loss of enamel and tooth decay. Enamel on teeth may become worn due to teeth grinding or incorrect teeth brushing technique. The enamel tooth surface may be eroded by acidic or sugary foods attracting oral bacteria further damaging the tooth. As the outer enamel is destroyed, cavities may form in the tooth surface right through to the inner dentin and tooth pulp.

The tooth may present with toothache and feel sore. Leaving cavities untreated worsens tooth decay and may lead to gum disease. Dentists often seal the back molar teeth with fissure sealant and fluoride treatment to prevent tooth decay. Cavities should be filled to prevent bacterial infection that may lead to tooth and bone loss.

Tooth coloured fillings

Nowadays, white fillings are designed using tooth-coloured dental composite or porcelain ceramic to restore tooth structure and function. Not only is the tooth strengthened with white fillings, but teeth appear white and healthy. White fillings blend with existing tooth structure so that teeth appear natural when smiling. Liverpool Dental Spa in the heart of Liverpool ,offers white fillings for discreet and effective treatment of cavities.

Patients In Liverpool Learn About White Fillings And Amalgam Fillings

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Traditionally metal amalgam fillings were used to restore decayed teeth. However these could be easily spotted in the mouth and give an unpleasant look to the mouth area. Also, amalgam fillings were found to create dental toxicity which caused some unexplained symptoms and diseases. When it comes to white fillings the teeth stay protected without the need to be exposed to mercury toxicity. It also helps retain the healthy and natural looking smile.

When acids from plaque and bacteria successfully remove the enamel from the surface of the teeth and moves into the dentin material of the tooth, the tooth begins to decay. Once the bacterium passes the dentin, it will enter the dental chamber and attack the pulp. Once the dental pulp gets infected the tooth becomes technically dead and the patient would require a root canal treatment.  However with the help of white fillings the teeth can be sealed to avoid damage.

Advantage and Disadvantage

While amalgam fillings are strong and can easily withstand the pressure from chewing, they do not bond with the tooth as well as the white fillings do.  Because white fillings bond well with the tooth, they add to the strength of the tooth as well. Once white fillings are put in place they will be cured with heat to stay strong.

In comparison to Amalgam fillings, White fillings require less drilling, as the dentist will not really need to shape the teeth to hold the filling. This allows the dentist to save a lot more of the healthy teeth.

White fillings are great especially when it comes to the aesthetics. They blend very well with the colour of the teeth and therefore avoid undesired attention to the mouth area. Many people who opt for amalgam filling tend to restrain their smile to hide the fillings. This behaviour can easily affect their self-esteem negatively and cause long term problems. If you would like more information about white fillings, please contact Liverpool Dental Spa and speak to a member of the team today.
