What is Root Canal Treatment and When is it Necessary?

Friday, July 10th, 2015

Normally, if you bring up root canal treatment in conversation, you’ll be greeted with anxious faces. But at Liverpool Dental Spa, we do our best to assure patients that root canal treatment is nothing to worry about and this effective procedure can actually make the difference between losing and saving a tooth.

What exactly is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a general dental procedure designed to remove decayed tissue and help prevent the spread of infection. It is called upon when a dental infection has reached the living tissue of the tooth, known as the pulp. Once the pulp becomes infected, blood supply to the tooth is reduced and this increases the risk of further infection and the development of painful abscesses. Root canal treatment helps to stem infection and create a stronger, healthier tooth.

The procedure has something of a bad reputation, but we can assure you that you will be absolutely fine. In fact, many of our patients leave the practice and wonder what all the fuss was about. Before you have treatment, your tooth will be numbed completely to minimise discomfort. Once the local anaesthetic has taken effect, your dentist will drill into the tooth and start clearing decayed tissue from the root canals. It’s important to clean the tooth thoroughly to get rid of any potentially harmful bacteria and debris. Once the root canals have been cleared, they are then filled with gutta percha (a type of dental material) and sealed. Sealing the root canals helps to prevent the spread of infection.

Usually, after root canal treatment, it is a good idea to place a new crown to reinforce the tooth and offer even greater protection.  we usually place a temporary crown following the procedure and then the permanent crown around two weeks later.

Is there an alternative to root canal treatment?

Usually, root canal treatment is only required when the tooth is already damaged or decayed extensively and the only other option is to extract it.

The Best Ways to Fix Broken Teeth

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015

If you’ve slipped or tripped, you’ve been injured on the sports field or you’ve heard a crack when biting down on a hard sweet, there’s no need to panic – we have a range of effective solutions for broken and chipped teeth.

Treatment for broken teeth

If you’ve cracked or fractured a tooth, it’s always a good idea to call and arrange to see a dentist as soon as possible. The tooth will be weak and vulnerable and the sooner we patch it up, the better. There are various solutions available for repairing broken teeth and the first thing we will do is have a look inside your mouth and do an X-ray to ascertain the extent of the injury. This will also help us to decide upon the best course of action.

The most common option for a broken tooth is a new crown. However, if the damage is less extensive, we may be able to repair the tooth using an inlay or onlay. Crowns are also known as caps and they are placed over the top of the tooth to make it stronger and protect I from further damage. If a tooth is very badly damaged, it may be best to extract it and then replace it with a dental bridge or an implant. This will usually be a last resort.

Treatment for a chipped tooth

A chipped tooth is not usually a dental emergency, but chips can weaken the teeth and it’s advisable to see your dentist and find out about treatment options. There are various solutions for chipped teeth, including cosmetic bonding and veneers. Bonding is a very simple, painless procedure, which only takes an hour. It involves layering a material called dental composite to repair the chip and fill in the missing tooth structure. At room temperature, the composite is soft and it can be shaped to fit different sized gaps. Once your dentist is happy with the placement of the composite, it is then set hard using a curing lamp.

Veneers are another possibility and they may be a good choice if you plan to combine addressing the chip with improving the overall appearance of your smile. We can fit individual or sets of veneers to suit your needs and we have a range of treatments on offer, including Da Vinci veneers, MACveneers and Lumineers.

The Truth About Root Canal Treatment

Friday, May 22nd, 2015

There is a widespread belief that root canal treatment is a painful, terrifying dental procedure and we’re here to set the record straight and tell you the truth about root canal therapy. The reality is that this procedure has an unjustified bad name. It can, in fact, be a saviour for painful, infected teeth and make the difference between keeping and losing a tooth. If you’ve been told that you need root canal treatment or you have dental pain and are putting off going to the dentist, we can assure you that you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a general dental procedure carried out to treat an infected tooth. This course of action is usually recommended once an infection has reached the living part of the tooth known as the pulp. The pulp contains the nerves and blood vessels and once it becomes infected, there is a high risk of further infection, abscesses and eventual loss of the tooth. In most cases, root canal treatment can make the difference between saving and extracting a tooth.

The actual procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. Once the tooth is completely numb, your dentist will drill into the tooth to reach the root canals. They will then remove any infected and decayed tissue and ensure that the root canals are clear. The root canals will be filled with gutta percha to seal them and prevent infection from spreading. After this, a new crown may be fitted to strengthen the tooth. After root canal treatment, you may experience very mild discomfort once the effects of the anaesthetic start to wear off, but this should only be temporary and you can use over the counter pain relief.

We understand that many dental patients feel nervous, especially when faced with a procedure such as root canal treatment, and we have a range of techniques and the latest technology on offer to help anxious patients to feel more relaxed and ensure that treatment is as painless and comfortable as possible. If you do suffer from dental phobia or anxiety, please do not hesitate to tell your dentist. They will go out of their way to reassure you and help you to feel calm and safe.

Children’s Check-Ups Keep Cavities at Bay

Wednesday, April 8th, 2015

Recent news headlines have highlighted high rates of decay among the UK’s children and at Liverpool Dental Spa, we’re determined to do our bit to keep cavities at bay and ensure our younger patients have healthy, bright smiles. We strongly advise parents to bring their children for regular check-ups and we also have a range of preventative treatments on offer.

Children’s check-ups

Check-ups are essential for patients of all ages and we advise parents to start bringing children to the clinic for routine dental checks from the age of 12-24 months. Check-ups are quick and simple, but they really make a difference to oral health. Our friendly team is experienced in caring for children and we go the extra mile to make your child’s time with us fun, stress-free and enjoyable, so that they can’t wait to come back in six month’s time!

During a check-up, your dentist will have a close look at the child’s teeth and gums and look out for any possible problems, such as cavities or staining. Your dentist will also record details about the development of the teeth in your child’s records. If there are any problems, such as early signs of tooth decay, we can then discuss treatment options with you and ensure any issues are dealt with quickly to prevent pain and make sure the situation doesn’t get any worse.

How often should my child see a dentist?

We usually recommend six monthly check-ups for children and adults. However, if your child complains of toothache or pain, call and arrange an appointment sooner and we’ll do everything we can to get them fighting fit again.

If you have any questions about children’s oral health or you’d like to find out about our services, which include fluoride varnish and fissure sealant treatment, don’t hesitate to give us a ring or pop in and see us.

We use a range of restorative techniques and restorations to produce amazing results. These include veneers, composite bonding, white fillings, dental crowns, bridges and dental implants.

Which treatment will suit me best?

Usually the choice of treatment will be dictated by your dental needs. For example, if you have a missing tooth you will have different options to somebody who has a chipped tooth.

Treatment options for missing teeth include dental implants, dental bridges and dentures, while options for repairing damaged teeth include dental crowns, composite bonding, inlays and onlays and veneers. If you have a decayed tooth and there is a cavity (a hole) in the surface of the tooth, the best course of action is usually to place a filling in the cavity.

The benefits of clear braces

Clear braces provide a solution for patients who want a straighter smile without worrying about the stigma attached to wearing visible braces. With clear braces, you can go through treatment without any anxiety about how you, or others, will feel when you smile. Clear braces also offer an alternative to traditional braces for people who work in industries where image is very important or they have to maintain a professional look at all times.

  • Perfect Clear

We can recommend which treatments will be best for you once you have had your consultation and we are aware of the kind of movement that is required and the nature of your orthodontic needs.

It is important for patients to have an initial consultation so that your dentist can assess your needs and determine the severity and nature of your orthodontic issues. Consultations are also a great opportunity for patients to get to know their dentist and to ask any questions they have about treatment. Getting braces can be daunting and most patients have lots of questions. Our dentists will be happy to give you answers and allay any worries or fears you have.

What Are Implant-Retained Dentures in the Centre of Liverpool?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2014

Implant-retained dentures combine the advantageous aspects of dentures and dental implants and they are an excellent option for patients who have a large number of missing teeth.

Everything you need to know about implant-retained dentures!

With implant-retained dentures, the denture is anchored by dental implants, rather than the suction of the gums and this provides much greater stability. With implants there to hold the denture in place, there is no risk of the denture sliding out of position and this means that you have complete peace of mind, as well as the ability to chew food with force. As there is no chance of the denture coming loose, you can eat whatever you like without any worry at all, so crusty bread and juicy steaks don’t have to be off the menu.

Implant-retained dentures are also much easier to clean and maintain and you don’t have to spend time every day soaking your dentures. This treatment is simple and stress-free; there is no need for denture adhesive and you simply clean your mouth in the normal way.

What does treatment involve?

The first stage of treatment is the planning stage. We will arrange a consultation so that we can talk through the procedures and discuss treatment time. We will also be able to explain how the treatment works and outline the benefits and of course, we will be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

Once planning is complete, the first procedure can take place. This involves placing the dental implants. To do this, a small incision is made in the gum and the gum flap is lifted; the implant is then secured into a pre-drilled hole in the jaw and the gum flap is closed and stitched.

Once the implants have healed, the dentures are placed in position.

If you would like to find out more about implant-retained dentures or our other tooth replacement treatments, don’t hesitate to give us a call today!

The Importance Of Regular Check-Ups For Children In Liverpool

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014

Our clinic is forward-thinking, modern and stylish, but we retain a sense of familiarity and cater for patients of all ages. We love welcoming children to the practice and our friendly team always goes the extra mile to ensure that they leave with a big, sparkly grin on their face. We understand that going to the dentist can be a scary experience for little people and we do everything we can to help ensure they have loads of fun and can’t wait for their next dental appointment.

Children’s oral health

The importance of good oral health for children should not be underestimated. Although the milk teeth are designed to fall out, premature loss of these teeth can contribute to problems with the adult teeth and we actively encourage parents and children to take steps to avoid and prevent decay from a very early age. Children who have decayed teeth may experience pain and toothache, which will affect their concentration and their mood.

We encourage children to adopt a good daily oral hygiene routine and we are happy to show kids how to brush their teeth and answer any questions they have about teeth cleaning and why it is important that they brush their teeth twice a day.

We recommend daily brushing in the mornings and evenings for at least 2 minutes each time and also advise parents to consider preventative treatments for their children. These include fissure sealant and fluoride varnish. Both of these treatments are designed to reduce the risk of decay; fluoride helps to make the enamel stronger, while fissure sealant treatment provides a protective barrier between bacteria and food debris and the cracks (fissures) on the surfaces of the teeth.

Dental check-ups for children

Check-ups are a really important chance for us to chart your child’s tooth development and check for any signs of decay or gum disease. Regular appointments also enable us to spot changes in the mouth or any issues, such as orthodontic problems, that may need treatment in the future. All the relevant information from the check-up is recorded in your child’s notes. Dental checks are quick and painless and getting children used to regular appointments from an early age reduces the risk of them becoming scared and anxious when they see a dentist. We recommend 6 monthly check-ups for children from the age of 12 months old.
