Three Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay in Liverpool

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017

Tooth decay is one of the most common preventable illnesses in the UK. At Liverpool Dental Spa, we’re all about prevention, so here are our top 3 tips to help you prevent tooth decay:

  1. Learn to brush properly: it’s so important to do a good job when you clean your teeth. Brushing your teeth doesn’t involve waving a brush around and hoping for the best. Make sure you cover every individual tooth, set a timer to ensure you brush for at least 2 minutes and reach right into the corners of the mouth. We also strongly recommend flossing and inter-dental brushing, as this enables you to clean the cracks between the teeth.
  2. Use fluoride toothpaste: fluoride is a mineral, which has oral health benefits. Fluoride is found in tap water, but it also added to toothpaste. It helps to reduce the risk of decay by strengthening the tooth enamel.
  3. Book a dental check: sometimes, when you have a cavity, it can take time for it to cause problems and this is why regular check-ups are so important. If you see your dentist every 6-9 months, there’s a good chance that your dentist will spot any warning signs before they become more severe. Frequent check-ups can also lower your risk of gum disease and keep your smile looking bright and beautiful for longer. We also recommend annual trips to the hygienist.

If you have any questions about tooth decay or you’d like more tips to help you keep your teeth free from cavities, call us today. Our dental team will be more than happy to help!

Three Reasons Why A Root Canal Isn’t Something to be Scared Of

Tuesday, August 1st, 2017

Even the hardiest dental patients can come unstuck when the words root canal are mentioned. For some reason, this procedure has gained a bad reputation and it’s very common for patients to feel very anxious when their dentist tells them that they need root canal treatment. In reality, there’s nothing to be scared of at all. Root canal treatment is a commonly performed procedure, which can help to save an infected tooth. Here are 3 reasons why you shouldn’t be scared of having a root canal:

  1. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic: before your dentist does anything, they will numb your tooth using local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain at all.
  2. You can trust our experienced dentists: our dentists are incredibly skilled and experienced and you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands. Root canal treatment is a routine procedure, which will help to prevent further damage to the tooth, stem the spread of infection and prevent you from feeling any more pain. Our dentists will be on hand to talk you through the process, and they’ll also be there if you have any questions or you need some reassurance.
  3. Treatment seems much worse than it is: many people are terrified by the prospect of having root canal treatment mainly because there’s a myth that runs through the ages that this is a painful treatment. In truth, this procedure is nothing to worry about at all. You won’t feel any pain, you’ll be treated by expert dentists, and you’ll emerge the other side wondering what all the fuss was about. We promise you that we’ll look after you and you’ll leave us with a big smile on your face again.

Do you know what to do if you have a toothache?

Thursday, June 29th, 2017

If you’ve ever had toothache before, you’ll know that it’s very unpleasant. Toothache can be incredibly painful, but many people try and tough it out and hope it goes away. If you develop toothache, we’re here to help.

What causes toothache?

There are many possible causes of toothache, including dental injuries, infections and decay. If you have toothache, we strongly recommend seeking advice from a dentist, as pain can often be a symptom of underlying issues. If you have pain when you bite down, for example, this may indicate that you have a cavity. Toothache can also be a sign of dental infection. Abscesses can cause severe, throbbing pain, as well as making you feel unwell, and it’s best to get them checked out as quickly as possible. Unlike other types of abscess, dental abscesses need to be drained and removed, so you’ll need to see your dentist.

What to do if you have toothache

If you have toothache, it’s a good idea to take some over the counter painkillers and call your dentist. If your pain has got worse or it is coming on more frequently, this is a sign that you need to see your dentist. Applying an ice pack to your tooth can also help to ease discomfort while you wait to be seen. When you go to the dentist, they will have a good look at your mouth and try and ascertain the cause of the problem. Once they’ve determined the cause of your pain, they will discuss treatment options with you. You may be advised to have a filling or you may need treatment for an abscess.

If you’re in pain, don’t suffer in silence. Call us today, and we’ll have you smiling again in no time!

How we can help you have a relaxing dental appointment

Monday, June 19th, 2017

At Liverpool Dental Spa, we know that going to the dentist is not everyone’s idea of a relaxing day out, and this is why we offer a range of services to make your time with us as pleasant as possible. We also invest in the latest technology and treatments to eliminate pain and enable our patients to feel as calm as possible during their appointment. If you’re anxious about going to the dentist, you’ve come to the right place.

How we can help you to relax

We like to think of our clinic as a soothing oasis in the heart of the city. We have designed our treatment rooms and communal spaces to create a soothing, relaxing vibe, and we encourage you to make yourself at home as soon as you arrive. We will be more than happy to get you a drink, you can watch films, listen to music or read magazines or even treat yourself to a spa treatment. We have a range of spa therapies on offer and we can tailor a package to suit every individual.

Our team is experienced in treating nervous patients, but they don’t just have the skills to provide the best treatment. Our dentists and nurses are also incredibly compassionate, friendly and understanding. If you have any concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

We offer the latest treatments and we also have sophisticated technology, which enables us to minimise pain and speed up the treatment process. If you have a phobia of needles, for example, we can offer painless injections using an innovative device known as ‘The Wand.’

Sedation dentistry

Many patients feel apprehensive when it comes to the time when they have to have a dental procedure. If you have severe anxiety, we may recommend considering treatment under sedation. Sedation is a technique used widely in medical procedures, and it can also be hugely beneficial in dentistry. Unlike with general anaesthetic, you won’t lose consciousness when you’re sedated. However, you will feel drowsy and you won’t remember much after treatment. When the effects of the sedative become apparent, you won’t feel any pain and your body will feel completely relaxed.

If you’re a nervous patient, we are here to help. Call us today or pop in and have a chat if you’re in Liverpool city centre.

Top Tips for Ensuring Your Wisdom Teeth Don’t Cause Problems

Monday, May 8th, 2017

If you flinch when you hear the words wisdom and teeth in the same sentence, you’re not alone. Many people experience problems with their wisdom teeth. In some cases, the wisdom teeth erupt with no problem at all, but in others, they can be troublesome. Here are some top tips to help you ensure that your wisdom teeth don’t cause problems and some advice to help you out if you do have pain.

Seeing your dentist

When you have a check-up, your dentist won’t just be looking out for signs of gum disease and cavities. They’ll also look at how your teeth are developing. This means that any issues related to your bite (orthodontic issues) or your wisdom teeth, can be spotted early. If your dentist thinks that your wisdom teeth are going to cause problems, they may be able to act before you start experiencing pain. If the jaw is very small or the teeth are already crowded, for example, it may be useful to extract the teeth before they become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth often result from a lack of space in the jaw, which causes the tooth to start pushing against the neighbouring tooth. Ideally, we recommend check-ups every 6-9 months, but if you do have any pain in between sessions, don’t hesitate to call and make an appointment earlier.

Maintaining good oral hygiene

Sometimes, wisdom tooth pain is caused by infection, which can be prevented by good oral hygiene. Due to the location of the wisdom teeth, it can be very difficult to reach them to clean them properly, and this increases the risk of decay. If your wisdom teeth are developing, make sure you reach right into the corners of the mouth with your toothbrush.

Dealing with dental pain

If your wisdom teeth are giving you grief and you haven’t been to see your dentist, give us a call now. It’s best to get things checked out, just in case it looks like there are going to be issues further down the line. It’s common to have pain when your wisdom teeth are coming through, but sometimes, they can cause major problems, and it may be best to extract them before the situation gets any worse. If you’ve got pain, you can also take over the counter painkillers and use ice packs to make you feel more comfortable.

Five Foods That You Don’t Realise Damage Your Teeth

Friday, March 24th, 2017

We all know that cakes, biscuits and sweets are bad for our teeth, but what about those so-called healthy alternatives? Here are five foods that you may not realise will damage your teeth:

  1. Popcorn: popcorn is an incredibly popular snack at the moment, and there are many different brands and flavours to choose from. Often marketed as a healthy lower-calorie alternative to crisps, popcorn may contain less fat and sugar, but it’s still bad for your teeth. Popcorn gets stuck in your teeth, which increases the risk of plaque formation and the kernels can also cause damage to your teeth. They’re very hard, and if you accidentally bite down on one, you could break or chip a tooth.
  2. Fruit juice: if you’re drinking fruit juice, you may think that you’re making a really healthy choice. In some cases, juices can be really good for you, as they’re packed with vitamins. However, if you buy juices from a café or supermarket, they often contain a lot of added sugar. They’re also very acidic, which puts your enamel at risk. If you are buying juice, check the sugar content, and dilute each serving.
  3. Salad dressing: salad is one of the champions of the healthy eating world, but once you start adding things to it, it can soon become less healthy. Salad dressings may contain sugar and salt, and some can also have high fat content; however, the main problem for your teeth is the acidity. Acids erode the enamel, which increases your risk of decay and sensitivity.
  4. Smoothies: fruit smoothies are supposed to be brilliant for you, but this may not always be the case. Like juices, if you buy ready-made smoothies, they’re often laden with sugar. If you love smoothies, try making them at home instead.
  5. Dried fruit: dried fruit is often thought of a healthy snack option, but it can be misleading. Fruits contain natural sugars, but often, more sugar is added to bags of dried fruit. Eating whole, natural pieces of fruit is usually much better for you.

If you have any questions about tooth-friendly foods, or you’re worried that your diet may be letting your dental health down, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Our dentists will be happy to answer questions, and give you some healthy eating tips.

Lingual Braces vs Clear Braces – Which Invisible Treatment is Best for You?

Thursday, March 23rd, 2017

Increasingly, patients with orthodontic issues are searching for invisible solutions. Today, we’re fortunate enough to have some incredible options to choose from. If you’re hoping to undergo orthodontic treatment in secret, you may be thinking about clear braces or lingual braces, but which is best for you? Here is some more information, and some pros and cons to help you decide.

About Clear Braces

Clear braces can be either fixed or removable. Removable aligners like Simpli5 and Invisalign are very popular, but you can also get very discreet fixed braces, which are made using clear components. Popular examples include CFast and Six Month Smiles. Clear braces aren’t technically invisible, but they are very tricky to spot when you smile. If you would prefer the freedom of a removable brace, a system like Invisalign may be a good option for you. If you prefer the reliability of a fixed brace, CFast or 6 Month Smiles could be a perfect match. Removable aligners tend to be more discreet than fixed braces, but their success is dependent on you wearing your brace for the recommended time each day.

What are Lingual Braces?

When you think of braces, you probably imagine train-track style braces that sit on your teeth. Lingual braces are similar to this concept, but they are fitted to the back of your teeth. This means that you can smile away to your heart’s content without anyone being able to see your braces. Lingual braces can be geared towards those with minor or complex issues, and they offer a great solution for people who really don’t want the hassle of wearing visible braces. Perhaps you have reservations about how wearing braces could affect your career or you just don’t want people to judge you in any way. With lingual braces, you don’t have to worry about how your braces will affect your image. Fixed braces don’t always have to take a long time either. With STb Social 6, a system that is designed to correct minor imperfections that affect the front teeth, we can achieve results in just 6-16 weeks. Lingual braces can be more expensive than clear braces, and they tend to be a little uncomfortable to begin with.

If you’re interested in invisible braces, why not call us today and find out more about which system could offer the best benefits for you?

Three Tips to Help with Jaw Pain

Thursday, March 16th, 2017

Jaw pain can make life tough. Nobody wants to wake up every day battling pain or worry about being uncomfortable when they eat. If you suffer from jaw pain, here are three tips to help.

  1. See your dentist: you may think that we spend all our time creating beautiful smiles and getting rid of troublesome tooth pain, but we can also help with jaw pain. If you have a sore jaw, there may be dental solutions available, which could put pay to your pain. In some cases, jaw pain is associated with bruxism, or grinding the teeth. If you grind your teeth, this can cause the jaw to become painful and swollen, and we can fit a custom-made bite guard to prevent damage to your teeth and jaws. If you have pain in the mornings, or your jaw feels stiff, call and make an appointment.
  2. Painkillers: if you have pain, it may be worth taking over the counter painkillers. Painkillers are designed to target discomfort, and make you feel better. If you have pain that is persistent or you’re getting pain on a regular basis, don’t rely on pain relief. See your GP or come and visit us. Painkillers should only be used as a short-term measure.
  3. Rest: if you have jaw pain, it may be caused by overuse. If you’ve been eating food that requires a lot of chewing, for example, you may find that your jaw becomes sore. Try and rest, and apply an ice pack to your jaw. If you still have pain, give us a call and we’ll arrange an appointment for you. If you’re suffering, don’t ignore pain, and hope it will go away. We are here to help.

If you’ve got a painful jaw, don’t struggle in silence. Call now and book a consultation.

Constant Toothache? How a Root Canal Could Help You

Monday, February 27th, 2017

Toothache can be a real pain. If you’re battling toothache constantly, it’s time you visited your dentist. Ongoing dental pain may be a sign of an infection or severe decay. In this case, we can use root canal therapy to save your tooth and free you from troublesome toothache.

What does root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment is a routinely performed dental procedure, which is called into action when an infection has reached the living part of the tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp contains the blood vessels and the nerves. When the pulp is damaged or decayed, the tooth starts to die, as blood supply is reduced. If root canal treatment is carried out in time, it’s possible to save the tooth.

Before you have root canal treatment, the tooth will be numbed completely to prevent you from feeling any pain. When you can’t feel a thing, your dentist will drill into the tooth to access the root canals. They will then clean the tooth, clear out the canals, and remove the decayed pulp tissue. When all traces of damaged tissue have been removed, your dentist will use filling material called gutta percha to fill the root canals. The root canals are then sealed to prevent further infection.

After root canal treatment, we place a new crown on the tooth. This will help to make it stronger.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Root canal treatment has a bad reputation. If you mention those words all in the same sentence, you’re often greeted with anxious looks. The truth is that root canal treatment isn’t painful because the tooth is numbed using anaesthetic. You may feel very mild discomfort after the anaesthetic has worn off, but we do recommend taking painkillers if you do have any pain. We often find that patients build themselves up for something horrific and then leave us wondering why on earth they were so anxious. If you are nervous about having treatment, don’t hesitate to mention this to our dentists. They are there to help you, and they’ll do everything they can to make you feel relaxed.

Chipped a Tooth Over Christmas? Tooth Repair Solutions

Friday, January 27th, 2017

If you’ve chipped or broken a tooth over the Christmas holidays, don’t panic. We have a range of solutions available to patch you up and restore your confidence.

Minor chips

Minor chips don’t usually cause any long-term dental problems, but they can affect the aesthetic of your smile, and therefore make you feel less confident. Thankfully, we are able to offer a highly effective remedy for chips and worn teeth. Composite bonding, also known as aesthetic or cosmetic bonding, is a single-session treatment, which can restore your smile to its former glory with no pain at all. Bonding is a technique we can use to build up worn surfaces, fill in chips and even reduce the size of gaps between the teeth. Your dentist will use dental material called composite to carry out minor repairs to the tooth in question. At room temperature, composite has a similar consistency to putty, and this means that your dentist can mould it to fit gaps perfectly. Your dentist will select the closest shade to your natural tooth colour to ensure the best possible aesthetics. When the composite is in the right place, it will then be set using a curing light. This makes it hard, and resistant to further damage. When your dentist has carried out any final adjustments, they will show you the fruits of their labour, and hopefully, you’ll be beaming again!

Broken teeth

If you think you may have broken a tooth, it’s advisable to see your dentist as soon as possible. If the tooth is broken, it’s best to try and repair or strengthen it, as leaving it may result in further damage and an increased risk of infection. If X-rays show that the tooth is fractured, we may recommend a new crown. Crowns are placed over the top of damaged teeth to make them stronger and more stable. Veneers may be another option worth considering for more extensive damage.

If you have a chipped or broken tooth, call us today and book a consultation. We’ll have you smiling again in no time at all!
